autosyche - The wheels were totally OK and did fit very well and were for the octavias but i dont know how it all happened but when asked from one of the Skoda technicians , i was told that the size of this wheel is not what co. recommends ,the company ones were 15*6 whereas mine 15*6.5 ..
Beemer,
Look for rim width calculator at http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
...it gives the options for a Skoda (195/65 R 15 I guess) from 5.5 to 7.0 inches...so you are well within the prescrobed width here...

Reason OEMs are fitting bigger and bigger wheel/tires is so that they can fit bigger brakes.

another reason for looks.

Ride will deteriorate due to higher unsprung mass and stiffer sidewall.

For indian conditions, FE and ride quality rule....not to mention cost. So, the companies are justified in what they are offering. Enthuiast community like us has different requirements and in no way represent the majority.
