75K kms looks easy and I won't be surprised if they last 1lakh kms - ofcourse given my average driving of 8K per year, it would take another 6years to hit 1lakh kms.
Would that qualify for a record ? :-)
IMHO, your tyres are ~6 years old, the rubber compound has lost its natural properties. I would just change tyres regardless of tread depth! And I did at 50k and 5+ years, though the tyres could do another 15-20k from a tread-depth view... A few things that deteriorate are : tyre noise, handling and braking, more susceptible to punctures etc...

^^^ I do see your point and you are in all probability right, though I guess there might be other params involved like usage-pattern (car standing unused for long durations vs being used regularly), etc which play a role. Ofcourse since I hate to waste a resource that has not been properly consumed + concerns about tyre-pollution, I prefer to use tyres till they are usable based on tread-depth.

BTW the stock Modi-Continentals that came on our 1985 M800 were replaced on wearing out only in 1998. Had done only 40k kms.

@supremeBaleno : The tyres are the only connection of your car with terrafirma. I would not try to save costs or environment or whatever, at the risk of poor grip, handling and braking performance. Especially since the Baleno is severely undertired at OEM spec! I would just change tyres and recommend the same to others :-)

In my previous car(WagonR), the Stock MRF tyres lasted for 58000 KMs. Even then the SA told that it can run for another 10000Km with speed less than 80.

I replaced the Bridgestone S220 Tyres for my Accent before 5 months with Yoko A-Drives. The rubber compound became rigid and stone like since the Accent enjoyed most of his life resting under shade with minimal run. Total Kms covered with S220s : 34500. After getting the yoko's I've covered 9000 Kms Approx. and the new tyres are awsome.

@lancer_rit, with your 2nd post, I decided to google up info and this is what I got from Bridgestone website (who knows a product better than the manufacturer). Looks like 10years seems par for the course.

<<<While most tyres will need replacement before they achieve 10 years, it is recommended that any tyres in service older than 10 years from the date of manufacture, including spare tyres, be replaced with new tyres as a simple precaution even if such tyres appear serviceable and even if they have not reached the legal wear limit. This recommendation does not in any way reduce the consumers’ responsibility to change tyres when appropriate.

For tyres that were on an original equipment vehicle (i.e., acquired by the consumer on a new vehicle), follow the vehicle manufacturer’s tyre replacement recommendations, when specified (but not to exceed 10 years).>>>

Full article at http://www.bridgestone.eu/filelibrar...fe-English.pdf

Disclaimer : I am not suggesting people should use tyres for 10 years or whatever - to each what works for them.

Present set of bridgestone Potenza GIII 165/60r13 have lasted 35K kms ...and look good to last another 20 k kms for sure .

All the my earlier tires have been replaced due to tires wearing out due to either suspension damage or a damaged side wall .But they have usually lasted 30 K -35 K kms atleast

That's some heavy usage in 1 year. Which tyres do you have on your car?

Drive safe.

The stock tyres of my Grand Vitara lasted for 48000 kms. Then I switched to BFgoodrich and have done another 14000kms but the threads are still as good as new.

Interesting discussion:-) Michelin has almost identical words in their tyre manuals in US. Also, they say the same on their India website as well.
Michelin India - When to Change Your Car, Van or SUV Tyres? - www.michelin.in

However, I read what is written there somewhat differently from you. Both tyre manufacturers clearly say that "most tyres" will _not_ last 10 years. After 5 years, they strongly advise atleast an annual checkup of tyre condition with a tyre dealer/specialist to judge safety. And they say that we must not use the tyres beyond 10 years.

Also, Michelin only provides tyre warranty upto 6 years from purchase or minimum tread depth which is earlier. This clearly tells me that the manufacturer does not believe he can provide predictability after 6 years. Hence, I believe changing tyres after 5-6 years makes most sense esp with the kind of roads, hot weather climates etc we have.
I would still change tyres after 5-6 years, but yes, if you are fine with the downsides, and do get your tyres inspected regularly, you could keep them for longer - much less than 10 years I hope :-)

My usage is low (but regular) and mostly in city (low speeds) - so IMO with regular inspections, I believe it is OK to use the tyres till the tread depth is good. But like I said, to each his own.

BTW, warranty period is not same as period where the product will work predictably. For eg, most manufacturers offer a 2-year warranty on cars, but that does not mean they think the car will be inpredictable after 2-years.
