Do not go in for 205/50/R16. This would result in a drastic drop in FE, increase in Braking distance and narrow reduction in the top speed. Having gone through an upgrade for my Lancer petrol where I chose 205/50/R15 instead of 195/60/R15 "JUST" for the looks the bigger tires would give,Trust me have spent considerable time and money on getting issues resolved. The costs incurred by me approx- Lenso Alloys (5)- Rs.20.5K Dunlop SP Sport 9000 DSST- Rs 4.8K each ( there is another version available -Dunlop SP Sport 9000 for 3.6k each). Allenkey nuts etc -Rs 800. Really good tires and I would recommend them. Cheers and hope this helps.

| hi guys have been reading a lot here on this forum, very pleased such a community exists. i have a query about upsizing the tyres on my 2001 daewoo matiz, i wud like somethin just a bit more wider (without sacrificing the FE or ride quality too much)on my stock rims, what would you guys suggest? also does anyone know some shop in chennai where i can get a good deal for tires and maybe even a set of alloys (if $$$ permits). also what tires would be good? the apollo acelere? potenza??? thanks in advance for the help |

(1) Suspension (long-term damage more likely due to the harder ride?). (2) Top speed (will come down due to wider tyres? not sure of this, since I plan to switch to the lighter alloy wheels). (3) Hydraulic steering response-- will the steering become less responsive, making the car less maneuverable, due to the wider tyres? not sure of this, since the lighter alloys should compensate to some extent at least. An off-topic question: what would happen in case of failure of the hydarulic steering, say, due to loss of hydraulic fluid level-- would the normal steering be retained or would there be complete loss of steering control? (3) Fuel economy -- will it come down due to the wider tyres? Again the lighter alloys should compensate. Actually don't care too much if FE comes down slightly. (4) Risk of tyre damage on bad roads (say, if one hits a pothole at high speed as you have pointed out elswhere) -- does this increase due to the lower profile? Also, would you recommend that I upgrade to 5J alloys, as opposed to the stock 4J? What are the advantages/disadvantages of 5" rims, as opposed to 4"? The reason I am asking so many questions is that I do drive at high speeds every week on the Pune-Mumbai route, and the roads do become awful during the monsoon season. Secondly, one must also consider why the Hyundai engineers are choosing the present stock tyres -- one must credit them with some intelligence, after all, and surely they must have done extensive testing under Indian conditions. The question in my mind is whether they had primarily city driving conditions in mind (which would be the case for the majority of their customers) while optimizing the tyres? Would my intended upgrade make more sense for high-speed long drives? I must confess that I am half-tempted to play it safe and go for the stock size after all (although I am certain that I need tubeless tyres/alloy wheels). Regards, rks

| Senior - BHPian | There are conflicting views on TBhp regarding the correct upsize for a (petrol) lancer. the stock size is 175/80 R13 as per the company site (though thats for the current model... i'm assuming it holds true for the older ones as well). What is the ideal upsize then? I've seen a fair number of Tbhpians using 205/55 R15's. is this a good size? does FE, power and ride comfort decrease significantly? also, which tyre is available in this size? eagle F1s and pilot precedas are not. and how about 195/55 R15 or 195/60 R14? are these better fits? i was kinda leaning to 15 inchers, because they fill the wheel well nicely. any suggestions? kpzen, iraghava, others... what say? |

| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | The correct up sizes are as follows: 175/70-14 185/65-14 195/65-14 205/60-14 185/65-15 195/60-15 195/55-15 205/55-15 If roads/ride is not an issue then 15" is a good upsize especially since it looks really nice filling out the arches properly. But if the roads are bad then I would suggest you stick to 14" Tyres choices have already been mentioned here earlier on various threads.

| Senior - BHPian | Regarding 15" rims... does it help if you upgrade your suspension... say fit Koni / Pedder ? And the reason I asked about the choice of tyre is that some of the sizes mentioned (especially 205/55-15, which I was leaning towards) are not available for F1, Potenza G3 & Pilot Precedas. @elf is using Venturas, @Ricky_63 is using Maxxis... what about other folks who've upgraded the rubber on their Lancer? How about Dunlop - is it good? |

For the 15" I'm not very sure.

if the stock is 175/80-13: Rolling radius = 305.1 mm 195/65-14: RR = 294.8... pretty high difference 205/55-14: RR = 290.55 ... even worse correct me if i'm wrong, but they don't seem to be the right upsize...

| Distinguished - BHPian ![]() | Yup razor4077 I'm dead sure. the lancer has one of the worst upsize calculations. The 175/80-13 OE tyres have radius of 305.05mm but when fitted in the lancer's wheel well they do not foul as they are skinny. If you put 195/65-14 although you have taken care of the radius/dia but the tyre protrudes out and when you go over a bump or load the car it hits the wheel well at the rear. The lancer SFXi model has 185/60-14 which is totally messed up difference with the 175/80-13. the best tyre size is in between. for 14" you need the 195/60-14 or the 185/65-14. for the 15" the best bet is 195/55-15 or 205/50-15.
