Hi Guys,

I will be taking delivery of my Punto this Wednesday. There was a tyre shop right outside the showroom and when I inquired these are the rates I got:

Buyback for the stock Tyres: 2200 Per Tyre
Yokohama SDrive 205/55-R15: 4400 Per Tyre
Michelin Primacy LC 195/50-R15: 4400 Per Tyre

Which one should I go for.
My criteria is:

1. low road noise & good ride quality - I dont like noisy tyres and having to feel every bump.
2. Descent road Grip
3. Should last about 40k - 50k at least

Please Help.

There is a TYPO in my post above: Profile of the Michelin tyres is 60 and not 50.
*Michelin Primacy LC 195/60-R15: 4400 Per Tyre

Gees... Just read Tadu's thread. Feel I would be much SAFER with a set of Michelin's.

Not that I would be touching those speeds but the Michelin's seem to be a safer bet.

What if I go with Michelin Primacy LC 205/55-R15? Since the Rim size is same, would there be any warranty issues?

First and foremost, congrats for the great buy!

There wont be any warranty issues and you can happily go for 205/55. There wont be any scrapping issues either.

Congrats on your car. I would say go for Michelin. Read the reviews on this this forum. Also check Goodyear & Bridgestone. Michelins are selling quite well these days.

Have you also considered PP2? They are also available in 205/55 R15. Am also getting delivery of a Red Punto (Emotion Pk, Diesel) next week, lots of confusion in my mind too. BTW what brand are the OE tyres?

PP2 is a total performance tyre and wont last too long. Thats too much for me. And i guess too much for a Punto also. I think stock tyres are GT3's, not sure though.

What is the rim width of the Punto alloys? 5.5J or 6J? Will they take 205?

Stock tyre size for the Emotion Pack is 195/60R15

Don't know about the Rim width. How do I find out?

I guess its 5.5j, checked it on the International version of the Punto. I tried 205 tires on OZ 15" alloys and it was a perfect match.

Rim shouldbe 6j. It is an alloy wheel. Highly doubt it is 5.5j! Edit: furioussphinx: WHAT!?!?! Are you sure? It's ridiculous. Cannot be 5.5j!! It's a 15" wheel for heaven's sake!

205/55 R15 will fit comfortably, but frankly, you dont need 205. The Punto is not a very fast car. Unless you want to mod it, then get 205. Otherwise 195/60 R15 is the best. The rolling circumference is exactly the same as stock(so no warranty issues), better ride quality, etc.

Just get a good tyre like the Michelin Primacy LC and you should be set for a very comfortable ride.

Dont go for PP2s. They are a little noisier than Primacy LCs.

Now, while I love the Michelin brand, you deciding to go for that based on Tadu's thread is the silliest thing I've read in a while! He had a bad experience with S Drives and then was happy with PP2s. He is an extreme driver with a ridiculously fast car. How in the world can you compare the two cases?

Please go for Michelin! I would personally recommend that but do it for the right reasons!

I think you got me wrong. Tadu's thread just added some skepticism to my though process. I believe the Michelin's are pretty good. That's why I included them in my preferences in the first post itself.

I will admit however that after reading that thread I was kind of swayed towards towards the Michelin but i'm still open to any suggestions.

Within the Michelin brand, is Primacy LC the right choice?

Regarding Modding, the only thing I will do is add a Pete Box and a Green / K&n Filter. 205 Justified?

Nope. Even for that, 195 shoud be good enough.

Primacy Lc is the ONLY choice in Michelin! :p

Ok. Thanks for the inputs.

Now how would these stack up against the 3 parameters I mentioned earlier:

1. low road noise & good ride quality - I don't like noisy tyres and having to feel every bump.
2. Descent road Grip
3. Should last about 40k - 50k at least

Stick to 195/60/R15.

Ok Its Done. Ill pick up the Primacy LC 195/60R15

Now what about the price i've been offered.

Rs 2200 / tyre for the buyback &
Rs 4400 for the new Primacy LC's

So ill have to pay 11K for a set of 5 tyres.
