Default re: Volkswagen Vento : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Hi All,

My drive is VW Vento TDI 2013 model. My stock tyre was Apollo 185/60/R15. I already had a tyre burst issue with my i20, which was brand new Apollo stock tyre, in which I escaped just because of God's grace. So, I immediately changed the rubber to Yokohama S-Drive and up sized to 205/55/R15 since a bit more grip is required for a slow driver of my kind !!

Yokohama S Drive is a great tyre without any doubt and is damn sporty. But, the rubber life of Yoko is pretty less when compared with Michelin XM2 [195/60/R14] of my i20, which was almost brand new even after going 35 K Kms, at the time when I sold it.

Now, I am almost 30 K Kms done with my Japanese friend and its time to find a new company. I would like to stick on with the same size [205/55/R15] even for the new one. What are my alternate options in that size other than S drive ?

Last time I was comparing S-Drive with Michelin PS3. May I know the new players in the market. I am looking out mainly for Pirelli , Yoko and Michelin. Are there any better options available?

Note: Apollo, Good Year, JK Tyre - Kindly excuse !

In 205/55-15 you have only ZLO, S Drive and CPC2. No Michelins no Pirellis.

Just upgraded the tyres on the Vento, the stock Apollos were unusable after 36k KMs. Went ahead with 195/60/R15 size, chose the Pirelli CINTURATO™ P1™ VERDE tyres, worked out to be close to Rs. 5100 per piece, sidewall was visibly stronger than Bridgestone Turanzas ER-60s in the same size. Continental has a lot of complains and is very rigid about warranty claims is what the dealer told me.

Did not want to venture into the Indian brands or Yokohama because of the experiences shared on the thread, especially Yokos.

Ideally, would have gone for 205/55/15 CPC2 but Continental has discontinued that size in India and the only stock is from grey market at Rs. 6800 per piece, not worth it. S-Drives are great, but no dealer had 2014 stock, they all had July-October 2013 stock, which is not very convincing.

Other options in the 195/60/15 size are -

Bridgestone Turanzas - Rs. 5200/piece
Michelin XM2 - Rs. 5800/piece
Michelin Primacy 3 - Rs. 5900/piece
Yokohama Db - Rs. 5000/piece
Yokohama A-Drives - Rs. 4800/piece
MRFs/Goodyears/JKT/Apollo

Continental CPC2 and CTC5 in this size are discontinued, the only size they are doing in 15" is 195/65.

Initial impressions: Very low noise, can hear the engine loud and clear, grippy, light steering. A little stiff in bumps, but better than stocks, not looking for tyres too soft, don't want them to suffer a cut. Will update as I use them more.

CPC2 has been officially discontinued in this size, only imported/smuggled stock from grey market is available i.e. without warranty. Conti is only making 195/65 in 15" - nothing else for India in 15".

S-Drives in this size are very rare to find, if you find them, the stock will be at least 9 months old, which makes you not want to buy them. Not sure if MRFs are worth the money.

Thanks for the update! Wasnt aware about this size!

MRF is definitely worth the money for normal street/highway driving.

Just got the shoes of my Vento replaced. My Vento has done 35K of which 75% is from Chennai - Blore - Chennai runs. It had come with Apollo's and the fronts needed replacement asap. I love the Pirelli P7s on my Audi and I wanted to try the Pirelli P1's on my Vento. So,

Out goes the Apollo Acceleres 185/60/R15
In comes the Pirelli P1 195/60/R15.

I got them for 5100INR per piece at Majestic Tyre Store in Egmore, Chennai (opposite to Don Bosco). It is a small shop and the job was done fairly quick.

I cannot really comment on the tyres yet but on the 8Km journey home the car felt a little firm, low road noise and the ride has definitely improved. Will be taking the car to Blore and back next week, and I shall update.

Glad to see another set of P1s amongst the Vento owners. What pressure are you maintaining in them? The tyre shop filled 33psi and I feel that's a little too much for these hard tyres, I would assume 31psi would be good, but yet to try. What's your take on this?

Hi, I am running them on 32psi and yes you are right. I am finding the fronts to be a little bit bouncy. The rear seems to be fine, based on my family's inputs. I am planning on reducing the pressure tomorrow and see if it makes a difference.

Hi.

A question to the guys upgrading from stock 185/60/R15 to 195/60/R15.

What do you do of spare tyre? Do you keep it 185/60/R15 or upgrade that also?

If not, is it safe to drive with 3 tyres of 195/60/R15 and 1 tyre of 185/60/R15 for 40-50 kms in case of a puncture?

Planning to change tyres of my car, so want to clear my doubt.

It's alright to srive some distance with a smaller sized spare. The newer vento when delivered from the company showroom does have 185/60/R15 on four main tyres and a 175/70/R14 in the boot.

But difference between 185/60/R15 and 175/70/R14 is just 0.40% and difference between 185/60/R15 and 195/60/R15 is 1.99%. Even then it's fine ?

And if you leave the spare tyre 175/70/R14 and upgrade 4 others to 195/60/R15, the difference is 2.34%.

.

As I told earlier, I am very much satisfied with the control and grip offered by Yoko S drive 205/55.

Can some one suggest me a better tyre of the same size please ?

I am expecting a low noise tyre with better life ( say 45 Kms plus) and comfort.

{Note: I maintain the tyres moderately well; checks the pressure and alignment every alternate week / 1000 Kms (which ever is earlier); does a tyre balancing and rotation every 5K Kms}.

Default Apollo Acelere Buyback and 205 55 15 options

guys,

just got into the vw club....

1. if i drive straight from showroom to tyre dealer how much buyback should i expect on the 185 60 15 Apollo Acelere ?

2. If i stay at 185 60 15 i will go with XM2. If i go 195 60 15 i'll go with Primacy ST3. I'm looking for a balance of comfortable ride/minimum road noise/dry & wet grip. Which of the above do you suggest ?

3. I see no other option in 205 55 15 other than S drives. Can we expect the CPC2 to make a comeback soon or is it gone for good ? After reading over many pages really wanted to get the CPC2. i really like and want the 205 55 15 look....

Thanks.

Both xm and 3st are optimum choices for your requirements. Decide on the tyre size to choose between the two

Pro for 185
1. No warranty issues
2. Easier buy back and cheaper
3. No speedometer error

Pro for 195
1. Fills the arch wheel better
2. More cushioning as taller sidewall
3. 6mm increase in ground clearance

Apollo should give u minimum 2.5k a piece buyback easily

Keep us posted

Ps: I am on p3st

update..

discovered a trye guy close to my place. he keeps many brands. asked him about 195 60 15 primacy st 3 for which he quoted rs. 6150 and he also showed me the hankook v8 rs 205 55 15 the quote was about rs 5300

I'm now trying to read more reviews about the hankook and other 205 55 15 options as I really want the 205 look.

buy back offered for the 185 60 apollo was rs 2800. and for the 4 oem polo alloys was rs. 6000. does it sound ok for the alloys ?

I am also going to visit bk and universal as suggested above to check out more alloy designs.

cheers.
