Default The Zigwheels and Fort Jadhavgadh Heritage Drive - May 2011

Jadhavgadh, a picturisque location around 30 kilometers from where I stay (Kothrud). To go or not to go? The distance of 30 kms was too much and that too on a Sunday, but a vintage car rally in Pune was reason enough for me to make the trip.
This time, the event had a Fiat special section among the regular stuff, which made it all the more exciting. I reached the location at around 8:15 am and expected some magnificent machinery scattered all over the ramparts of the beautiful location. Sadly, many of the important / beautiful cars that had participated had vanished on the 7th itself. Some of the noteworthy cars still remaining were Viveck Goenka's magnificent 1929 Mercedes Benz Nurberg, a StudbreakerGolden Hawk of 1953, Vijay Mallya's famous 1927 Fiat Corsa, some magnificent throughbreds from the Poonawala stables and Sameer Kadam's eyecatching VW Beetle soft top.
I remember quite clearly reading in the old Indian Auto journals (I have a majority of them since September 1986) about Mallya's Fiat Corsa and how it was restored from a heap of scrap.
The Fiat special can be best described as a dud. Some important cars had already left the venue and among those remaining were Fiat's recent classic Indian failures (Palio, Weekend, etc) and some vintage cars who were covered. All the other vintage cars were parken in colourful shaimiyanas which made photographing them a pain.

The bikes on display were parked haphazardly and resembled typical Pune's parking. never-the-less, there were some very beautiful machines like the Solomon brothers' regular Velocette and a hand gear shift AJS, to name just a few.

Thanks Amar for sharing the pics. Too bad that you were not able to view all the cars.

Looking at the snaps i think the Bike section was more interesting than the cars.

My favourite among the lot was the Golden Hawk. Its looks awesome especially with the wings at the back.

Good to see these bikes, Pune sure has a good assortment of them. BMC 935 Triumph Tiger incidentally belongs to our karl (karlosdeville), just restored.

Thanks - you're welcome to visit whenever next in town.

Currently she is running on a mikuni, I have the original Amal in good condition too which I will get down to fitting shortly. (Tiger 100s always had a single Amal, Thunderbirds/Bonnies/Tiger 100SS' possibly had twins.)

Also sourced the correct taillight, headlight and tyres and need to redo the seat and numberplates, and she'll be sorted cosmetically. Then need to put in new timing wheels and she should run more silently. I'm very grateful to Sudarshan Chemburkar for his super work on the bike.

Shall shortly put up some of my pictures from the super event.

I attended the event on Saturday and Sunday with my 1956 Triumph Tiger 100, fresh out of restoration. Having hardly ridden the bike since she was ready, I was a tad anxious on how she would perform, but fortunately she ran like a dream even in the hot afternoon sun of May, with a pillion.

The historic venue was very picturesque and well laid out, though a tad far from the city, which is a bother in the heat. I really do hope the event will move ahead in the future into cooler months. And I do hope that bikes will not be left out in the sun while cars got a tent. Having said that, we were very well looked after and well fed on both days, kudos to the organizers for that. I really did enjoy myself.

As promised, the selection of cars had few repeats over last year, and some absolute gems like the Fiat Corsa, Caddy V8 Tourer and Mercedes Nurburg attended. Our very own bulldogji debuted his Mark VI Bentley fresh out of restoration. The Studebaker Golden Hawk I think attended a vintage car event for the first time. A couple more really special cars were expected but couldn't turn up.

Each participant was presented with a neat monogramed memento of Jadhavgadh a copy of Adil's must-read book on Classics and Thoroughbreds.

I will try to avoid repeating cars already posted. Here is Adil's Fiat 500C flanked by a Fiat Arditta (there was a Fiat retrospective - more on that later)

4 cars of Zaheer Vakil were invited, each quite spectacular in its own way

The Zigwheels and Fort Jadhavgadh Heritage Drive - May 2011-cars01.jpg

Bikes were represented by a pair of lovely Indian Chiefs, the Solomon brothers on their Velocettes, a rare Ariel sloper and many more. Noteworthy was a trio of very early bikes - a couple of AJS (one completely unrestored, and one completely restored) and an early Triumph Trusty. More pictures over the weekend.

Thank you Karl for posting images of the Fiats. I missed seeing them on Sunday. i will post some more photographs I took in due course.

Good that there was no bike parked near your Triumph Tiger as I was able to capture the complete bike, beautiful job done.

Great pics, thanks Amarpaithankar & karlosdeville. There were a lot of eye catchers; I loved the restoration on the Tiger. Do you have any pre restoration pics that we can look at?

I agree that the event should be moved out from summer months. I am not aware how many people attended, but a few of us cancelled our plans as the area is a bit 'open' during summer.
