Hey Philedonos, seems like you were quite heavily photographed at the event, is there something you are not telling the rest of us???

Indrojit, i dodnt know you were there, well missed a chance to meet up with you again. Well next time for sure.

So, here goes, the next batch:

Vikram Singh's beautiful 1936 Mercedes 290 Pullman Limousine. This car looks straight out of a Gestapo Film.

Ranjit Mallick's 1940 Buick 90L Limited Limousine with a Fisher body was the car which travelled the longest. Awesome looking machine.

The Diljeet Titus owned 1938 Buick 90L Limited Limousine with a Fisher Body reminds you of the Godfather era.

A beautifully restored specimen as all of Titus's cars. He loves his car a lot, as can be seen from his collection and his passion to maintain them.

I met up with a whole lot pf collectors and restorers throughout my life but there are very few collectors of repute whom you can count on your finger tips, as being friendly, not moving around with a chip on their shoulder and are down to earth. Diljeet Titus, Vivek Goenka, Hormusji Cama are such men belonging to a very very short list of such people.

The Indian Heritage Class had a small but stunning turnout

1947 Chevy Fleetmaster Deluxe Sedan owned by S.V. Gupta

I felt the Fleetmaster was an over accessorized vehicle. The rear wheel covers, the cluster of badges was not needed. May non original additions to an otherwise good vehicle.

Adil Jal Darukhanawala's nifty 1949 Fiat 500C Convertible.

Adil researched and sourced the OE tyre specs and had them imported from Michelin. These are tubeless.

It was only time before Adil was bitten by this bug, being a car buff and a Parsi.... not having an inbuilt love for old cars is not done. Glad to see him coming this way. Without spilling the beans, ill let u in on a secret, hes already working on another Indian Classic!! Await details on that!!

Hormusji Cama's 1955 Dodge Deluxe Convertible

I can say for sure that Hormusji has at any given time, a few vehicles worthy of a Cartier Event. I wonder why this one was chosen and not others from his garage. Something I will always wonder.

Feroze Mehta's 1955 Dodge Kingsway Sedan with body by Chrysler.

The engine of this car is amazingly silent. I was standing close when he revved and that startled a bystander to remark "Wow was the engine running?" Feroze Uncle (as we fondly call him) is known to take great care of all his cars.

The hard chrome on these cars is something else. Mirror like, one can see the reflection of other cars.....

Hello Friends,

I am writing today to congratulate the organisors for the spectacular event which they have brought into India. This Cartier event has changed the very level of Vintage Car Shows for us in India, so kudos to Mr.Manvinder Singh and his team.

It was great meeting fellow bhpians and like minded indivisuals from the vintage and classic car fraternity. It was indeed a pleasure interacting with all my co participants and the judjes.

Cartier had provided super parkinging space for the outstation cars, where we could work on our cars as well. My cars reached Taj on 7th early morning, all dust covered due to the 8 day transportation. Unfortunately the MGA exhaust system was completely damaged en route. All through 7th and 8th I worked like a glorified mechanic along with my helpers to get the cars to show standards. The exhaust was even temporarily sorted out. This is why I missed all the action and chit chat moments with co participants, who were having a nice time at the hotel after hours. I was perhaps the only owner around in that area along with atendents of other participants, who were event busy sprucing up their cars.

The high point of the event was Stirling Moss himself handing over my trophy. I felt extremely delighted and possessed at that moment. All in all it was a fun filled successful weekend, and I felt satisfied as my cars performed well. Since I restore my own cars, and have been able to reach my cars to a certain level, I feel content .

3 Cheerz to ' CARTIER TRAVEL WITH STYLE '

Warmest Regards,

Shrivardhan Kanoria.

Wonder if the ex-salarjung Merc a few years ago was lying with a mechanic on Tilak Road, Abids, Opp: a church, and this car had belonged once to an Abid's Cinema Hall owner and then to a Supplying co. owner near Muazzamjahi market (names avoided) before ending up in Rajasthan...Legend has it, that the first owner after salarjung, had found a bag full of gems & stones from the underneath the driver's seat...Cheers!

The show is over, reactions have come in, and we get on with our lives.

As can be expected, in the first instance, the show was compared to the first event in Mumbai in 2008. That being the only Cartier event attended by me, I cannot compare these. Those who attended both 1st and 2nd shows of Mumbai felt that this show was better in terms of ambience, celebration, partying, gourmet etc. But this was termed a car event, and after looking at all the photos I felt that the cars present in the first show were much better, the numbers, the marques, and the groupings. The Delhi show was poor in almost all respects, and for critiquing that I am termed a trouble maker and not even invited to attend this show. How lowly, my arguments and observations on the second show were appreciated by many, and no one from Cartier or the curator cared to discuss the subject. My aim was to help improve, but many lacunae increased to the point of ridicule.

For me, the star of the show was Marespand Dadachandji. He had his hand in so many cars, and they all shone. Amirís Rolls and Amalís Ford were outstanding. I understand that he was an advisor to Pranlalís cars, they too shone and how. Such restoration has brought up a higher level than we ever saw before in India. The Studebaker Flying Hawk looks superb, Captain will be a proud owner indeed.

Others who showed their skills and capabilities were the Studebaker of Mr. Goenka, his 1949 Chevy convertible also had superb finish, the Buick of Diljeet, the Mallya cars, my favorite was his Lanchester. I was looking forward to the twin six, apparently that was not ready or did not fit scheme of things. I loved the Buick 1939 and Cadillac convertibles, superb machines. Mercedes 290 is another car which I liked, and so too the Bentley VI ex-Mysore. This car was to come for the 1st show but could not because of a water pump failure. The Adler was very cool, hope the color scheme stays that way. Many more cars looked really nice. I am not fond of the heritage category, Ronnyís Fiat is a class in itself.

Objects noteworthy were the Napiers which would not have been restored but for this show, the Rajkot Rolls in real splendor, the interior of the Kalahandi Rolls, the presence of Pranlals cars nicely spruced up, I hope this continues. The Motorcycle lot was also appealing, so many rare and gleaming machines gathered in one place.

A person who showed what detailing is all about is Amal Tanna with his Ford. And his entry was invited only in November. He had all sorts of stuff related to his car displayed. No period cameras or hunting accessories, simply tools and such stuff, where did he get that Ford battery from? Notice that many engine parts had their stickers in place, and there was a manual too.
Many cars came from far, we would normally not get to see them in Mumbai.

The show was a huge success in terms of a being a show, collectors and enthusiasts who were invited had an opportunity to catch up. All to whom I spoke said that they had great fun.

But The Third Cartier Travel In Style, Concours D'Elegance, 2013 could yet be likened to a circus, lacking depth as far as automobiles are concerned. It is a pity that this show was not serious, an opportunity was missed to make this a show worthy of international standing.

Cheers harit

The Bike display was as awe inspiring as the cars. Bikes from all eras were present in great and impressive numbers.

The Motorcycles were displayed in the lawns below which can be accessed from the road below. The other part of the lower lawns was kept cordoned off as that was the area for the prize distribution and unique displays, some of which had not yet arrived on this first day. The next day would be a day of crowds, more gate crashers and a sea of enthusiasts.

A special mention must be made of the immaculate 1912 Indian Light V Twin owned by Subodh Nath, a fine gentleman who eagerly obliged me by lighting the carbide head lamp for me to take pictures which can be seen below.

Few more two wheeled beauties

I retired for the day and drove back home excited about the next day when the show would actually be open for the invitees. I was told that the cars and bikes would be shuffled and reshuffled as their names would be short listed for the awards in the various categories. Also was awaiting some of the beauties in the exhibition class only for display which were still being spruced up and on the their way to the venue. I would sleep well dreaming of the beauties i had captured in my camera.

My next post will be the conclusion.

Day two was a huge collection of people invited from all walks of life, some not even car enthusiasts..i guess from the A ist of celebrities and some other pretty faces and some gate crashers (happens at most such functions) which are customary to have, especially since it was a very high profile event.

Some familiar and some not so familiar faces from the event.
