Amidst this discussion of what makes a coupe a coupe, etc. may I set the pigeons aflutter, with a Li'l cat? Er, catch! Am sure y'all know that there are for door coupes too. The Rover P5 Coupe, to cite one example. I also recall a lot of fun in train coupes, but lemme not digress from automotive chit chat...Cheers!

The is another one, a Flight Hawk in Mumbai. Pictures here are from the Cartier Circus. The second pic shows a bit more of the "coupe" styling.

Here are pictures of probably the most valuable coupe in India. You may guessed that it has to be a Ferrari.

Some history and pictures of 1969 Ferrari Type GTB 2+2. Imported by Mr. Adi Dubash

Quote:
Harit's recollections
Now the 365 of Dubash was probably a brand new car, and I am very sure was yellow when new. But he must have brought it in later because production ended in 1970 or so. Customs duties were high, and an older car did get the benefit of drepeciation when duty was calculated. Dubash had good taste for cars, he got them brand new, even had a BMW M1 which was sent back because of our good roads. I had a unique opportunity of seeing the 365 at the airport where the driver opened the bonnet for us. Tripple carb et al. He mentioned that the car unfortunately was suffering because it hardly ever ran beyond the 2nd gear. Later I believe tha clutch burned out. That car was repainted, once black and another time this reddish colour.
Sporting the red colour

Here is another Ferrari which left our shores in the 1980's

1966 Ferrari Type 275 GTB pictures and some history

Quote:
Harit's recollections
Most likely the first Ferrari in India was this 275, it may have come in second hand, but when in India it belonged to Dr C. Rossi. He raced it all over India, and in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka since 1972) where he met with an accident and damaged the car, I believe the front right side. It is said that on one occasion he carried his special fuel in the car, all the while smoking his cigar.
Anyway, the car had an aluminum body, and it was fixed at Apex garage in Mumbai by a highly skilled denter whose name I forgot, he was a Muslim chap. Apex garage was located behind the petrol pump opp the Telco showroom. I clearly remember going to that garage one evening late at 11PM and the watchman allowed us in to see the car, completely dismantled and the body was already taking shape. After she was fixed, and very well done, I doubt it was raced much after that. If I remember correctly, this happened in the first half of 1980's. The car was parked at his residence which was the 4th building away from where I was staying, and we often used to go and see the car in the basement. Of course she was often seen on the road also. And I do not think that this car came through an auction by STC.

The Rambler used to be in Hyderabad with a good friend who is know for selling imported cars.

I had seen it in his parking just when Harit was probably buying it, they also had a Impala hardtop which was also going in the transaction wonder what happened to that one.

There was another Ferrari in Delhi, also a 365 but later model wonder what happened to it also the Merak and Indy which were with the flamboyant collector.

My Fiat 850 was also a Hadrtop coupe and also that DKW in Hyderabad amongst others.

The Babu Khan family had a Plymouth Fury Hardtop too. Also the Wanapaety four door hardtop Mercedes needs to be included along with the others of its type.

Here are pictures of a trio of Chevrolet Coupes

Harit's 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Coupe, was rescued from being scrapped. The car had a lot of missing parts and is in long term restoration.

As can be seen in the pictures, the car has a beautiful shape and will be a stunner when restored.

Another coupe from Karanataka, currently under going restoration in Bangalore. This is a 1967 Chevrolet Impala SS, sporting a 5L V8 engine. Car has been with one family since new. She too will be a stunner when completely restored.

Lastly, this coupe is similar to the above 1967 Chevy. However, this car is 6 cylinder car (stand to be corrected). Car is in long term ownership and remains in Bangalore.

Thanks for pointing out this car, I had not seen this before. This is a 1948, as it has a nose on the grill

This 1958 Alfa Romeo SVZ standing for Sprint Velocce Zagato, has been discussed significantly in the past. The car was raced and re-bodied at one time, before she came to India.

Quote:
Wasif, quoting Alfa Forum
SVA/SVZ *04249*: 1957-1958 with Mario Angioli; 1958-1959 with Silvano Bernabei, raced by "Lucky" (Battistoli?); 1959 with Clara Barbato, raced by Dario Sepe (note: Dario Sepe already raced in 1958 a Giulietta, but I do not believe it was SVZ *04249* since Bernabei was from Roma, and both Barbato/Sepe were Neapolitano; 1960 raced by Silvio Mandato (note: the book lists Sepe for the 19590927 Catania-Etna with No. 312, but Mandato was there and finished 2cl, Sepe is not listed with *04249* after this); 1961 sold to Renetto Venneli, General Manager of Alitalia Airlines India, Bombay (note: Renato Valli, Italian ambassador at Bombay, according to Giugno)
Quote:
Harit's post
Chassis 04249 was transformed from a SV into a SVZ in 1959. First owner was Dario Sepe.It probably competed in the Targa Florio in 1959 under no. 38. The car was sold to an Italian diplomat in 1960 who took it to Bombay.
Picture of the car competing in Targa Floria in 1959

The car currently is in need for extensive restoration and currently is in Chennai.

This was a great car at one time, probably one of the most valuable coupe in India, with its racing history. Alfa SVZ are very rare cars.

Wish the owner the very best to bring this car back to condition.

Cheers

Doc has sent me pictures of his Triumph Coupe. From the pictures, I have been able to identify the car as a 1966-67 Triumph GT6 MkI. These cars sport a 1996 CC, 6 cylinder inline engine.

Awini had posted his beautiful single owner Karmann Ghia earlier. However, we did not get see and appreciate the beautiful design of the car, in the absence of a picture from the rear

Quote:
The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a sports car marketed in 2+2 coupe (1955–1974) and convertible (1957–1974) body styles by Volkswagen. The Karmann Ghia combined the chassis and mechanicals of the Type 1 (Beetle) with styling by Luigi Segre of the Italian carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built bodywork by the German coach-builder Karmann.

Here is a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle from Chandigarh

Quote:
The 1971 Chevelles got fresh front-end and rear-end styling that included large Power-Beam single-unit headlights, a reworked grille and bumper, and integral park/signal/marker lights. New dual round taillights were integral with the back bumper.

Time for some Fords

First is a 1971 Ford Capri Mk I with 1.6L engine. These were small affordable coupes

Quote:
Although a fastback coupé, Ford wanted the Capri Mk I to be affordable for a broad spectrum of potential buyers. To help achieve that, it was available with a variety of engines. The British and German factories produced different line-ups. ............ while the British versions were powered by the Ford Kent straight-four in 1.3 and 1.6 L form.....

The other Ford featured here is the Ex-Gondol 1966-67 Ford Fairlane 500 GT. This is a Club Coupe, meaning has a large rear seat similar to the four door sedan

Quote:
The Fairlane was revised in 1966. The appearance was changed to match the full-sized Ford, which had been restyled in the 1965 model year. The front end featured vertically stacked dual headlights....

Two different two-door coupe models were offered. The lower-end Fairlane Club Coupe had pillars around the rear windows, while the higher trim level was a pillarless two-door hardtop, similar to the convertible.

Hi,

I think the same car was up for sale a while ago, here is a screenshot of that. Not too affordable to me!

Lol Srinand, this car seems have been traded quite a bit.

This Capri had been on sale and the price was discussed as way back as 2010. Please see this link (Help wanted - Buying a Ford Capri Mk-1). At that point the car was valued at Rs. 3 Lakhs . Wasif says that in 1998, the same car was available for Rs. 60,000/-
