Hi Karl, The last model of Plymouth to be imported into India was 1954. Thereafter they came as knocked down kits and by 1956 were being assembled in the premier factory in kurla . Howevervin cases where the original books are lost and duplicates issued, many a times the books have a stamp stating that the car was imported.

After India stopped the manufacture of sensible and presentable cars, the Government did import cars from time to time. There was a batch of the Plymouths imported in a larger quantity to serve as government cars. Many Governor Raj Bhavans had these in their fleet, also Air India had a few of these. Remember, for CHOGM or Asian Games India imported about 200 Mercs W 123 in a lot, all white which thereafter plied as taxi's under ITDC. UNICEF and other UN bodies also brought in a large number of vehicles.

Cheers harit

Presentable?? A hasty (and definitely cheap) respray job with some paint sprayed onto the tyres, some trim parts especially around the headlamps missing, hubcaps, badges missing...!

Presentable to be read along with comparison...never mentioned that it is concourse class.

1st Class was 1959 Plymouth Fury
2nd Class was 1959 Plymouth Savoy
Janta Class was 1959 Plymouth Belvedere.

This is a 1959 Plymouth Belvedere 4-door sedan.

It is missing the windshield and probably the wipers too. Missing the figure-eight headlamp surrounds, missing the gold anodized aluminium logo, missing the original 1959 hubcaps. Missing the chromed brass badges.
Is it a V8? No! Push-button automatic transmission? No!
Seat upholstery repairs looks like a horse-cart tonga quality.
And it's not even RHD.

Roadside garages and inexpert restorations actually reduce the value of an old car. This car is not even worth Rs. 2 lakh, forget about 40 lakh.
If I start the engine and hear it run, I might even come down from Rs. 2 lakh.
Can probably be used for some crash-and-burn movie shooting.

That's odd! Why take the trouble of converting an RHD (which suited Indian conditions) to LHD?? When in fact the other way round would have been preferred? Or was it done recently, to raise the value of this car to the current price?

I was told by my late father that Kasu Brahmananda Reddy also had a Dark Blue Standard Gazel, which was later owned by Dr. G Ram Reddy, then Vice Chancellor of OU (and I believe he was related to KBR?)

In an RHD country, an RHD car would be worth more than an LHD car. And I believe today, it is illegal to import an LHD car into India.

In fact RHD to LHD conversion should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The car should be confiscated.
The garage who does this illegal conversion and the person who paid to get it done should should both be fined.

Car to Car, Harit's Dodge is complete, would that therefore not make it more presentable and desirable?

This Plymouth would require deep pockets to make it presentable, shame, a decent looking car spoilt

Two series of Plymouth were built for 1949 – 1952. The smaller of the two was called the Deluxe for 1949 – 1950, then Concord for 1951 – 1952. The wheelbase was 111 inches (2819 mm), and the average weight for the three models offered (business coupe, fastback 2 door sedan, 2 door wagon) was about 230 pounds (105 kg) lighter than the standard Plymouth, much lighter than the earlier P15.

Here is a 1950/51 Plymouth P20, which was exported to UK in 1991?? Wonder how this car got exported as late as 1991?

This car was put up for sale in 2013 in UK, after it changed multiple ownership.

Quote:
Very rare car full stop ! but probably the only right hand drive one anywhere !Manafactured in Michigan Detroit in 1951 and built to right hand drive specification. the Plymouth was then shipped to India to the only American car dealership at the time called Addison and Co Ltd. The owner of the dealership Mr Rangaswamy Mudaliar imported this amazing car for his own personal use. The car remained in the warm climate of India for the next 39 years. In 1991 imported to the UK by its second owner Mr David Green. The car sat unused for three years and then it was sold on to its third owner in 1994 ( Mr Jenkinson)Mr Jenkinson kept the car until 1998 when it was then sold on to a Mr Atherton who has recently spent nearly 2000 on re-commissioning and converting the car to a more reliable 12 volt system. This is an incredibly rare factory built right hand drive 6 cylinder 3 speed manual Plymouth P20 special De- Luxe LWB which was the top of the range car in its day.
