Hi Amol,

AFAIK, Dadajee Dhackjee never sold FIATS and neither did BCMA use their terrace for storage.
For me BCMA was an illegal home away from my legal home.

Dadajee Dhackjee did exist opposite BCMA in Shree Pant Bhavan, now some offices of an Insurance co or a bank have shifted in. that place. They must have a very high ceiling in their office. In prewar times they were agents for Mercedes-Benz, Packard, Hupmobile, Singer, Peugeot and maybe some more. When India developed an independant automobile policy, all these agencies became defunct. And Dadajee Dhackjee then sold Jeeps, not Premiers. Anyone remembers that?

What is an illegal home? I have heard of an illegal den.

Cheers harit

Yes Harit, I very well remember Dadajee Dhackjee selling Jeeps in the 70's.

And I stand corrected about the 'illegal home'. I meant 'home away from home'.

I remember it mentioned that they were also dealers for Hillmans? I recall someone posted an old ad pic. of an early 50s Hillman Minx sold by DD.

Yep. The car that started the Hllman Thread was bought new by my scout masters father from Dadajee Dhackjee. He still has original receipts.

Just a quick observation about the pic, I remember dad pointing out a building to me which was a workshop in the premier days. Which had parking on the roof of that garage. As I said, I cant remember it, but I shall ask him to have a look at it.

Also, one can clearly see a hill in the background. And what appears to be marshland or slums of some kind.

BTW, harit, where are the other pics?

EDIT: If you notice the first building on the left side, it looks like Nehru Centre. Hanoz Mogrelia says there was a service centre opposite Crossroads at Tardeo. I did not know of one there, but it does make sense.

That must be 'PREMIER AUTO ELECTRIC' but I cannot recollect if they ever had a rooftop parking like the one in Harits picture.

Here is one more picture of BCMA, this must be the Churchgate service station. A date of 1970 is stamped at the rear. The baloon car is a Chrysler. The bus and delivery van in the compound look odd. I doubt that the terrace with those cars is on top of this building.
Note those ladies carrying aluminium pots of water. Today they would use plastic pots.

Yes indeed! this was the BCMA Churchgate workshop main entrance from the lane behind the main road. I have been here several times as well in the 70's/80's.
I'm sure that this is a scanned picture again from your valuable collection.

President, I remember going to take delivery of our first Jeep in 1965 from Metro Motors at Hughes road!! They were the Jeep dealers. And our Jeep was serviced by them at their service station in the opposite road, where a residential building now stands.
This Jeep a LHD was the vehicle on which I learnt my driving and at age 12 caught by my father at worli seaface!![just because the driver was sitting on the right with his leg out] This Jeep had loads of memories left behind.
Are you saying that so close by even Dadajee dhackjee were jeep dealers? Yes they were some car dealers, but I remember seeing them selling the forward chasis Mahindra vans and minibuses, which Metro motors was not handling.

Yes Scooby, Dadajee Dhackjee were Jeep dealers in the early 70s at one of the buildings on the Worli seaface where they had their workshop behind the buildings and this was till the late eighties even. I think their parking area later became the notorious disco cum sleaze joint, "Fisherman's Wharf" for a certain period of time . I remember accompanying my uncle for getting a delivery of a Jeep from them. Petrol jeep, think it was a Cj3B.

Regarding the pic with the Fiats parked on the terrace, the tall building in the background could be Usha Kiran and the building adjacent to it looks like some kind of govt. Quarters, could it be the Railway quarters at Churchgate? Notice the sloping roof of the other structure next to it....Curchgate station? So that would make this the Churchgate building of BCMA then.

I dont think the Hughes road building had a terrace parking lot. As Ronnie Said, they had a basement parking lot where they also had their painting dept. My Grand dad's Chevy Impala, Biscayne, his Oldsmobile etc were all painted at BMCA. Those were the days where one only went to Misa Garage for suspension and wheel balancing too. My how times have changed.

This could also be the terrace of Starline Motors at Tardeo, though im not sure if they had a terrace. One last place this could be is Sion. They did have a terrace parking at Sion and the structures around it also seem to have existed there. Maybe Behram Bhai, the Fiat encynclopedia will have some light to throw on this picture.

Fantastic and nostalgic trip though.

Dadajee sold the Jeeps from Worli, next to Sukhdagar Estate where they had a big display area. Babloo's Ford A with P reg no stood there once. Service manager there was Mr. Ankleshwaria for a while. The Dadajee place at Opera House ceased to be a car showroom ages ago, I think some insurance co had moved in. I think the residential place you refer to is now Dharam Palace.

Fisherman Wharf was in Hotel Hilltop opposite Traffic commissioner's office, as far as I know. Now it is a family type of Hotel.
The terrace parking is definitely not BCMA at Churchgate, and also not Starline at Tardeo. We have to look a bit more around. Could Cyrus be so kind as to ask his dad?

This is a mystery, waiting to be solved.

Cheers harit

Ooops, maybe you are right and will know better, I had mentioned "as far as I know".

Here is a picture of the interior of a workshop, maybe BCMA at Churchgate? This seems to be denting and painting department, the Fiat in the front left has suffered accident damage (the radiator would certainly have been damaged), and a Dodge or whatever of the 1950's is being done too. Mr. President may be able to confirm this location.

Cheers harit

Huh?! But Metro Motors were the dealers for STANDARD cars at the time!

I have copies of sales brochures of 3 different models of the Standard Herald, mk1, mk2 and mk3 dating from 1962, '66 and '70 respectively. They all mention, in the list of dealers, Metro Motors, Hughes Rd as the Bombay dealer!
Plus a brochure copy of the Standard Gazel from the mid 70s where the same is mentioned (although by this time the address mentioned was "Sadhuram Patkar Rd")
