Dear Salilpawar - ref your post 259, these double decker trailer buses were in service with the BEST from 1971. They had MRR numbers. Most of them were used on route no 65 (route no 65 still exists) and used to go through the small Girgaum streets. One of them had overturned near the Majestic cinema junction in 1971. I remember having seen the overturned bus. The BEST bus depots used to separate the "horse" (as the front end is known) from the body and send it for repairs at the Dadar workshop where I worked for 6 months from December 1975 to May 1976 as a college trainee during my engineering course. I learnt many things there including pump calibration. The Dadar workshop still exists and still looks the same also.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

As per the wheel rims, it seems to be a old Bedford, try to get some pics of instrument pannel & wheel rims if possible. It will clear our doubts.

Thanks for the clarification. BTW, is that the original design of the front grille (which seems to be a reprocued panel by the looks of it)

Unfortunately I didn't get to take any other pics. of this bus as I was in a bit of a hurry then. I didn't even get off my bike to take this pic.

'will go for more the next time I pass by that area.

@ Stanher,
The design of front grill seems to be original. See the following pic.
I got this pics while searching google images for "Bedford Front Grill."
But there are many modifications done on this bus.

This bus will most probably be a Layland or Tata bus. But it would probably be a very old chassis or have been bashed up in a crash, so 'custom' built in front. Very common practice when trucks chassis were in short supply and commercial vehicles had no age limit.

I do not think that this chassis is a Bedford. The picture is of a bus abroad, probably bodied by Duple. The above bus seems to be a home creation, not an original design of a manufacturer.

Best if someone has a closer look. But is it worth the while?

I see something interesting next to the Bedford as well, with a sloping roof.

Nice pics.! But there is already a thread for commercial vehciels where you could've posted them:

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/vintag...thread-19.html

Also the MSX regn., from my knowledge, is a private one, but how come it's on a commercial vehicle? Anyone who could throw light on this?

'found this again in a flickr album. Although it is mentioned as Calcutta, I'm positive this is in Bombay, going by the double-decker and (possibly) red colour and the buildings/palm trees in the background.

Any idea what bus this is?

Its definitely Calcutta. The bus is standing next to Jeevan Deep building, and you can see the "ep" of Deep in the extreme left corner of the pic. Next to it is Tata Centre, a prominent early landmark of Kolkata.

FYI, CSTC had plenty of Double Decker buses and trolley buses (we used to call them "triple" decker). In my childhood, convincing dad to sit with me on the top deck of a trolley bus and peering out of the window as the bus toured the maidan area used to be a heavenly pastime.

Now all of them have been retired. One Double Decker has been bought over by Nicco Park (an amusement park in the city) and used for sightseeing. Another trolley bus has been converted by the State Govt into a mobile library.

The bus in the pic is probably a Bedford or an early Ashok Leyland. Until 15 years ago, most CSTC buses were Ashok Leylands (and tyres were Birla tyres). Only recently they've shifted to Tata.

Ok, thanks for the gyaan, pw! Some pics. can be so misleading! The front grille of the bus seems to be a "home-made" one though?

The number "WBS" suggests its Calcutta.

Err, gyan? I smell a "left-handed" acknowledgement! Yes, the Grille looks like a locally sourced piece. CSTC is famous for getting branded buses, then sourcing their repairs/replacements to local inefficient garages (usually recommended by politicos, but lets not open that kettle of fish now). Thats why most of these buses become smoky, belchy, running coffins before their time is due.

@Manishalive - May I know the reason for such a strong assumption, even after I've clarified the location and the vehicle both?
