Harit,

Just to reinforce the availability of Tubeless Tyres in India, here is an advertisement for Tubeless Tyres from an Indian Magazine of March 1957.

Mercedes - Benz always had TL tyres on the even for imports of latter years. I know of a 240 D a direct import by a very prominent "Godman" in India that had Tubeless Tyres.

If I am not mistaken, this Jonga in India was built only for the army. And civilians got military disposal stuff. So this advert was not for or from India. And engine was extremly thirsty, so almost all were dieselised. Is this correct? Anyway, nowadays very few are seen.

Harit,

If I recall correctly in mid 90s the Army Vehicle Faxtory, which was making the Jongas, ventured in to the Civilian market with a Civilian version of Jonga. In Trivandum - Grand Motors were the dealers.

I do not recall the technical details,

Best Regards & Drive Ride Safe

As ram says, these were offered for the civilian too, infact application for the dealership were also invited. Apart from the model in the picture, they had planned 2 other models, one cheap copy of gypsy and the another cheap copy of tempo trax. Lucilly or sadly they never took off.

@ Harit,
This is an Australian advertise.
You are absolutely perfect, JONGA (Jabalpur Ordanance aNd Guncarriage Assembly) is manufactured in India from 1966 - 1999 by VFJ (Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur) only for Indian Army under the license from Nissan Corporation, Japan which used to have 3956cc In-line 6-Cylinder Petrol engine.
VFJ did sell around 100 JONGAs powered by 4L Hino Diesel engine to civilians in 1996.
Some good JONGAs:
1. With original petrol engine - owned by Mr. Abhilash Nambiar of Thane.
2. Civilian version - owned by Mr.Arun Kumar Choudhary.

SS,

Unfortunately I can not give you the hard copies. These are all from a collection of old magazines in my family home. The collection was started by my Grandpa. Many others including me contributed to it over various points of time.

Best Regards & Drive/Ride Safe

Default Escorts & RD 350

Hello All

This probably is that advertisement that started all of the RD 350 fans in India on the dream of owning an RD 350 and all the madness that followed.

This was the first public confirmation from Escorts that they are going to make the RD 350 in India. This advertisement was in Novemeber 1981. Exactly one year from that in November 1982, the Rajdoot RD 350 was unveiled with Delhi Police using it as the out rider bikes for the President's - Giani Zail Sing- motorcade when he went for the opening ceremony.

I think watching the Indian colour TV trnsmission for the best time was exiting enough for me but the exitment went to Himalayan Hights when I saw the Police riding the shining RD 350s (I had a tip off at that time from one Mr. Upendra, who was the Escorts Sales Manager in Calcutta then.)

Rest is history and I got my 1st RD 350 HT (a bike that was being sent from dealer to dealer in Kerala and Tamil Nadu as a demo bike) in January 1984.

I have superimposed an exapaned scan of the RD Announcement portion alone so that it can be read clearly

The ad in itself was a bundle of contradictions - talking about squeezing out extra kilometres from the litter and introducing an engine to which fuel economy was almost alien and power was everything.

Best Regards & Drive/Ride Safe

Ram

Recently I was presented with a book called "Inside America" by Chaman Lal. The preface talks about this being the age of propaganda, is by Chaman Lal, gives address as Russell Street, and dated October 10, 1943. It was published by New Book Company, Hornby Road, Bombay.
There is little text, 20 pages and about 80 pages of pictures about life in America and the war effort, the heroics, war production, etc. The last pages contain advertisements, and one page was interesting which is posted below.
I did not know that Pyarelal & Sons dealt in Packards.
Where is Queensway, New Delhi? And what organisation was A.A.N.I.?
Obviously during the war no new cars were being supplied, and they "Will offer you the best Automobiles as they were doing Pre-war". Intersting, is it not?

Cheers harit

For what its worth on my recent visit to Delhi I noticed a couple of large shops/blocks named Peareylal at Connaught Place - not auto related though.
