Yes in case of Padmini many people did carry out such mods...although again it did have a wagon version also called the SafAri for a short while:



But this car, as shuvd pointed out is not a padmini but the italian Fiat 1100 version, among which the stationwagon version did exist originally (the brochure pic. proves it of course)

The wagon version in India was again coachbuilt, and never offered directly by the factory. There were 3-4 big names that would fabricate the rear ends on brand new cars.

Starline was one of the biggest names, I forget the rest. Ram had put up a detailed post on them earlier, i cant find it at the moment.

They (Starline) also had a version of the Safari with square headlamps and the grille almost like the 118NE. Looked like a hunchback from the side.

I assume this is what you speak of? I had seen this years ago, I forgot the name on the badge. It started with a V.

Lada's (Riva) are nothing but the Fiat 124's itself (which lent itself to the 118NE) With varying faces from ancient times to this day. It continues to be the largest selling model in history. Now if you add Premier Padmini/118NE and the Lada to the list of Fiat cars, you'd probably see how big Fiat actually is.

This 124 platform car actually was sold in all the continents and can be found from cold climes of Siberia to deserts of Africa.

The British made a lot of jokes on this car. (Like, why does a Lada have a heated rear screen? So that you dont freeze your hands while pushing it).

The other Lada was the Niva a small 4x4 which was quite nifty and had excellent offroading capabilities.



Okay we are going seriously offtopic. But Calcutta has a couple of Fiat 500s and a few years back we used to see Morris Oxford/Cowley stationwagon near New market, very original and shiny. Do we see them at the vintage rally's?

@ 1100D : that's a pretty definitive answer man..okay so the Lada is a Fiat and in India we know it as the 118NE & 1.38D if I'am wrong...all these years I used to think Lada was a Ruskie car....


BTW I think there are a lot of vintages in Kidderpore , Golpark & Ballyguange area, New Alipore and Park Circus but most of them are parked in garages but hardly taken care off..
