Default Delhi Rally pictures from the 80s

Hi to you all, I'm Julian, I'm new here, not sure where to start or if this is a suitable thread but after 20 years living in Delhi restoring vintage cars I have a few photos to share, some good some bad. More to come of other cars here and there, if you'd like.... you've probably seen them all before.................

Bentley 4 ¼ Vanden Plas

Thanks for sharing the pictures Julian. Why don't we start separate threads for pictures, coinciding with the World wars, namely

Automobiles in India - Pre 1918
Automobiles in India - 1919 to 1945
Automobiles in India - Post 1945

We must endeavour to have people across India post into these threads making it an exhaustive archive. Eventually we can segregate them Marque wise.

Does anyone think its a good idea?

I was also thinking, it is good to have pictures on our team-bhp site with separate pages for pictures. Some time I face lot of problems to post
on third party sites.

We can have different cars short history & photos by manufactures, year, countries, etc.

- Poineer of early Automobiles
- Famous marquis: Cadillac, Duessenberg, Cord, Auburn, Issoto Fraschini
- British early cars history: Herbert Austin, William Robert Morris, etc.
- American Cars: Ford, GM, Chevrolet, Buick, Dodge, etc.
- Famous Coach Builders
- Indian Car scene/ Maharaja / kings collections
- Present Private Collection in India:
- Prahanlal / Tharun Takhral New Delhi / etc.

Default Thread for pictures

A place for reference pictures would be good as otherwise they will get lost in the layers of threads.

We need the following categories:

Pictures (marque/model/year wise)
Reference(Technical data, production figures and bodystyles produced again Marque/Model/Year wise)

Lets not create too many threads. How do you propose we get it started. Eventually we can pursuade the administrators to create these two sub categories under the Vintage Car section

To keep it simple how about "The Picture section", then "Pre war" and "post war".
Pre war could be split into Veteran (upto 1913) vintage (upto 1939).

This suggestion also makes sense, can we have more of a discussion and freeze the categories. Our objective should be to create showrooms of pictures so viewers visiting come away with a learning experience. Ideally we must resist the temptation to fill the thread with our individual comments. It should be more like a reference thread, purely educational. What say?

Come one guys I know there are many of you who are die hard vintage car enthusiasts and each one a storehouse of knowledge, experiences and pictures. If we can have a few more guys participate in this discussion and agree on the classification of pictures I have no doubt the end result would be impressive.

Default Delhi Rally pictures from the 80s

Delhi Rally photos from the 80s
Pierce Arrow

Renault

I think this is the Lanchester that used to sit in Allied Motors in Delhi

Rolls Royce 25/30

Humber?

1902 Oldsmobile (Prem Nath Motors?) it used to come to the start and always got the trophy for oldest car but it didn’t run in the rally. Horizontal twin.

Another professional photo of the Delauney Belleville.

Lovely Rolls Royce 25/30 from Calcutta I think. Half steering wheel

1905 Rover 8hp I restored in 87 but before the wrong mudguards were changed. It did 7 or 8 rallys.

Here it is now again a professional photograph.

1919? Willys Overland, I did get it sorted out but it was already restored.

Great pics Julian, but you could have merged them with your previous post for ease of later reference.

A close friend has a very similar 1906 (ish) Rover lying with his family from day one. In a very poor state though.

What an impressive machine the Pierce Arrow! No wonder the Americans proudly heralded their three P's, the Packard, Pierce Arrow and Peerless as rivals to the best from Europe.

Its interesting to note that unlike Pierce Arrows sold elsewhere the ones sold here in india had their headlamps free of the fenders. One of the most recognisable feature of the Pierce Arrow were the headlamp holders as integral part of fender design.

Would the red car be ex HH Jhabua now in the Mallya collection?

Further, the car immediately after the Arrow pictures is a LaSalle but there's something odd about it. The bumpers aren't typically LaSalle (more like a V16's) nor is the windshield. Split windscreen??? (I have a V16 picture with a similar split windscreen) Also the wheels seem from a post 1930 car. Could anyone throw some light on this?

We have a 1929 LaSalle in the family since new and there are obvious differences. Could the car in the pictures be a special order or a result of restoration work.

Yup, the same Pierce, more here.
Long time no see - Take a bow - Business Standard Motoring

Here she is at a Pune rally a few years ago.

Jasdanwalla has a very similar car, Guj regd.

Never thought about the headlight config on these cars till you pointed it out. Perhaps for India they provided stronger lighting, necessitating different units altogether?
