Interesting vehicle, and interesting discussion. My 2 cents.

First of all, it is not an Austin A40 van. This is what a Devon van looks like. That nose was shared by the A40 Devon, Dorset and the van:

Name: austin A40 van chris hodge.jpg

Size: 31.4 KB

(Pic courtesy: Chris Hodge photos)

Now 2 points. First, the donor vehicle is an Austin 10 or 12, going by the unmistakeable grille.

Second, this is definitely an aftermarket execution job. Note the shape of the loading area, which has been modelled on an Austin 16 countryman. Yet the countryman was a woodie, and a much larger vehicle than this. The body panels on this one are metal (and were metal originally, as clarified by Deutscheafrikar). The slant of the roof is like an old Austin 12 truck.

So what is this vehicle? My guess would be either an Austin 12 hp van with a remodelled load area, or a van conversion to a Austin 10 or 12 saloon.

Default Mere bhi do paise! :)

Thanks pw! I too was going to point out that it isn't a Devon A40 by any means, but was wondering what model Austin it could be.

Also, uh...sorry to point this out- this is a rather trivial issue but just felt this may lead to a few confusions/questions from others otherwise! Besides, its a habit of mine arising from my profession! Hehe!

I think you actually meant van conversion of an Austin 10 or 12 saloon (ie. Austin 10 or 12 converted to a van) Did I get you right?

OK, bus....no more paise from me!

Did you mean van conversion from a Austin 10 or 12 saloon?

I guess it's always been a van, bought from Auto Cars marine lines. Any old timer from or who visited bandra would remember this at Hill road Mac Ronnells. Only thing is there were two veritical doors at the rear. The son has changed this to the wood drop down when he restored it. And he has added the rear seats and the side glass windows that goes with it. Probably seeing later models he was inspired by this.

I can't remember the exact model. He used it as his wedding car. I remember seeing it later in his compound though. He was very friendly with Vargese so used to park him ford and erskine in his garage too. German motors which is now in a building in the lane opp bahba hosp? It would be nice to see the photos of the merc

@Stanher - Yes buddy, I did mean a conversion from an Austin 10 or 12 saloon. Thanks for the correction.

@Deutscheafrikar - Aha, now you make it clear that the 2 doors were side hinged rear doors. (Your earlier post just mentioned them as side doors, by which I got the impression that they were on the sides of the vehicle)

In that case, I think my second guess - that this is an Austin 12 hp van with a remodelled load area, stands more ground. I have a pic of an Austin 12 hp van which has an identical frontal design and roof slope.

This is where a Austin and Dodge used to be parked, a dealer lives there ad occasionally parks cars belonging to his friend.

Harit you posted something in respose to this. About meeting up witht eh ex merc owner. I think that post has been shifted or is missing. Anyway showed him the photo on my mobile and he swears his car was BYZ... so whats the point in meeting him. I told him this is BYZ, go get your glasses but he refuses to believe this is his car. According to him his car is in Goa. So I said this has been photographed in panjim. He's too sly so Im wondering how he got cheated off the merc irself.

@the mole, is that the same car dealer who has his office in a garage on the front right side in the same colony, facing the main road .
