Incidentally a parsee friend from Bombay mentioned he had a LaSelle in his family years ago (later scrapped!). The people in this photo appear Parsee too, I wonder if there is a connection.

Default a few old pictures..

1 Grandfather with his dane.

2 Grandfather's MG, have a pic of the same car in London soon after he bought it. He unfortunately had about 800 feet of 16mm b&w film of motor racing, hill climbs which he had shot in UK stolen in London in the 30's. Luckily I have a few reels which were in another bag.

3 Late HH Jhalawar after a shoot.

4 Hounds at Jhalawar, this vehicle was nicknamed 'Dal Badal'

5 CK Singh of Bhinga, he had a xk120 too.

Will take some time, will put up some more pics once I get some old kodakchrome/ektachromes transparencies scanned.

Lovely pictures Sat, any idea what the car in the first and third pictures are? It looks American? The hubcap is probably revealing? Do you have any photos of any Mercedes-Benzs?

So many autoheads then too. I am surprised. If internet was invented then, they would have formed team-bhp then...

Default CK Singh of Bhinga xk120

In the posting by SAT who is "CK Singh of Bhinga" noted as having an XK120. I assume he is a well known identity/royalty?
At what time did he have the 120

5 CK Singh of Bhinga, he had a xk120 too.

Default mg - audhibahn

Julian,

No idea about the car in pic 3. Only have two b&w pics of Mercedes which I took at the vintage car rally, calcutta, early 80's. Have posted those pics here.

I gather the late raja sn singh of tirwa had a good collection of picture of vintage cars. We should check with his family in lucknow about these pictures.

A german photographer, Robert Huber, who spend most of time in India has photographed most albums of old landed families across India. He did mention there were several photographs with vintage cars in them. Will have to keep him at home for a week to go through all the images.

some of roberts images...

Karl,
short term memory seem to be failing , I did request the mods to delete one of the post.

Another pic of grandfather with a MG on a strech of dirt road he called the Audhibahn (road was close to a audhi 'odhi' - hunting/observation tower) In this area there used to be herds of black bucks sometimes around 800. The car would have to wait for 8-10 min for them to cross the road.

The good news is that the govermentt is showing interest to fence the forest land of 600 acres to protect the Lesser florican (endangered bird, bustard family) which visit the area during the monsoons.

Hey Cyrus, isnt the fiat MMY 43? One question though- how come being a padmini it has round side-indicators? Or were they taken from an older fiat?

An interesting invitation card I found amongst the lot of photos and letters. Dated October 1940, it bears a Hotchkiss logo at the top. How big was Hotchkiss in India in the 40s?

There is a famous restaurant in Hyderabad (or was it Secunderabad?) called Paradise which started in the 60s from humble beginnings as a tea shop and today proudly stands 3 stories tall and seats over a 1000 people, with lines of people waiting outside for their famous chai even at unearthly hours. My grandmother always told me of a photo that hung there showing a car similar to mine, so the last time I was there I had to check it out. Here it is Paradise hotel back in the day with a Standard 10 (sagging in the front just like mine!) passing by, and stealing focus might I add.
