Could not go near to the car, but looks like an Austin. Too many Bling fittings on the car.

Need to have a second look sometimes.

I am no expert but there is something odd about the fenders of this car, they look too big for the wheels or maybe the wheels are too small?
I tried to find something similar to this and a 15' Studebaker tourer is the closet I could find. Here is a pic of it

I think kasli is right, looking at the first and second photos. The "Automobiles of the Maharajas" identifed it as a 1915 AC,which does not seem right.

That canister would be where the carbide used to powere the headlights is stored...similar to a welding machine

Lovely picture, wondeing why this car has an MN plate, that was perhaps near Madras, south India like Ooty.
Holkar cars had HS plates.
The car may have a higher ground clearance because the roads were rough and often non existant. Perhaps the car wass deliberately sprung high.
The tank on the running board, as Wasif pointed out, is a carbide tank, water falls on the powder, a combustible gas is emited which is piped to the headlights and lit near the burner. Ofcourse these headlights were quite weak. Very decorative.
Some lights had this tank within the headlight unit itself.
Tail lights were often also connected.
I wonder if any Panhard's are left in India.

Cheers harit

Harit, For Panhards, please visit Sharad in Indore. I recall seeing some very handsome cars pre 1920 including Panhards.

I think you are refering to the Berliet, and maybe he does have a Panhard.
Still, very rare in India.

Cheers harit

(sorry for the picture quality- my camera was playing truant the moment it saw such beauties on its frame)
In fact my granduncle owned a 1910's Wolseley (could have been a 12/16 hp) that he used till the 1940's.It had acetylene lamps and he used to tell us about the electricals not powering the headlamps in older cars. The car used to be parked in a garage with GI sheets and wooden poles. Once, due to a storm the garage collapsed over the car. The car suffered almost no damage and stood like a rock. Sadly, we do not have any pictures of the car or his later cars.
