5 years before you were born, Standard Motor Company of Chennai launched the Standard 2000, a badged version of the Rover SD1, with an antiquated 2 ltr engine and transmission. It ran into lots of trouble with low quality, poor performance and a battery that had the lifespan of a moth. It ran for just 3 years before it was shut down.

This is either the Standard 2000, or an original Rover SD1 (looking at the wheel rims). Of course, am glad to see such an old car maintained so well.

I think this is a Standard 2000, now fitted with a Rover V8 (which was offered on the original SD1 avtaar). Hopefully some Hyderabadis can confirm. Looks neat.

yes it's a regular Standard 2000 upgraded with a performance grade 4.5 litre Rover V8 and related bits. the V8 Vitesse was 3.5 litres. I painted the car.

Wow, good job! Mechanically you've executed what Standard Motors unfortunately failed to, partly due to circumstances beyond their control!
Um, has the Standard badge on the front been retained btw? I've seen a couple of cars sporting a Rover(!) one in its place!

PS: If its relevant enough, here's a song from the famous Kamal Hasan starrer known as 'Appu Raja' in Hindi..taken entirely in the Standard Motors factory at MADRAS back in the late 80s (maybe just after the company went defunct hence was available for the shoot! ), complete with then brand new Standard 2000s and 20 Vans:

I had once posted about the Standard 2000 fiasco here on this thread @ post # 75 (duly certified in post # 79 by Stanher ).
Since we are discussing the Standard 2000, even after two decades we feel that it was the first ever, true luxury car "Made in India", with a dynamic and genuine motive, but not with mechanical perfection and a time-tested, visionary execution of the concept whose time had come.

Ebay UK would have some from the Rover SD1 for sure. No chance of getting them here, in fact Rover had purpotedly bought back all the unsold stock of 2000 spares from the Standard Motors factory at Madras before the property was auctioned and torn down.

There was plenty of stock left over, most was bought by Rimmers Brothers in the UK.

On a kind of related note, just came across some photos- possibly the last ones- taken of the Standard Motor Products factory at Madras around 2006, probably just before the place was finally auctioned off and torn down. Found in the Rimmer Bros' website, these pics. were taken when they had made a visit to India to purchase the leftover/unused stock of Standard 2000 parts to supply as Rover SD1 spares in the UK.

SD1 Special Offers Intro

Unfortunately no larger res. of the pics. available!
