Sentiments about the car by Mr Shammi Kapoor :

Quote:

I had seen the beauty I wanted:

" It was a skyblue colored, convertible; Buick Super; second hand. It belonged to then film actress Nigar Sultana, who wanted to sell it and it was on display at the Car Mart, at Hughes road. My friend and first producer, Aspi Irani, who I was signed with but had no picture on the floor, knew the owner of Car Mart, Mr. Chunnawala and so off we went to meet and negotiate for the car. He agreed to a pricetag of Rs. 16,500/-, to be paid on a monthly basis Hire purchase for 24 months. The down payment of Rs. 5000/- was to be paid by Aspi. For the next 2 years I paid Rs. 650/- every month almost regularly. It was on the 12th of June, 1952 that I got my Buick. It's registration number was BMY 3009.

Subsequently in my life span as a Film Star, I had a number of different cars; a Desoto followed by a Chevy Belair, a Chevy Impala, a Chevy Intercontinental convertible, a Ford Thunderbird, a Sunbeam Alpine, a Triumph, a Malibu some foreign and Indian Fiats and a number of Jeeps for my Shikar. But to this day the one and only beauty which has always remained dear to me in both my memory and my heart is, the BUICK BMY 3009.

From the star's website
In the issue I had hoped for more pictures of him with the car but this is all we got, with a mention that he would soon be upgrading to a Plymouth

The bunglow visible next to mannat is owned by the gandhy family the owners of the famous gallery chemould in bombay. Gallery chemould kickstarted the entire era of post colonial art in india and was instrumental in the success of many bombay artists including my grandfather. If i am not mistaken mannat was also owned by them and subsequently sold to sharookh khan. Just a bit of bombay trivia.

A few pics. from the early '70s BBC documentary on Rajesh Khanna, "Bombay Superstar" (available on youtube)
The merc. W115 belonged to Shashi Kapoor and he is seen driving out of his house in it (steering his way through public crowded outside his residence), he was also briefly filmed in said documentary.

It seems to be an Ambassador Mark II/III modified as a wagon which was a common practice in the old days.

And it looks like one of those 'backyard' modjobs that were very common on Ambys (and Fiats too) back then.

Spotted this '54 Dodge Coronet in a '70s movie "Hathkadi" driven by Sanjeev Kumar. The van looks like an early 60s Bedford?:

From an old Telugu movie I came across on youtube. Not sure about the make of the car- Ford Model A?

Note the snake horn on the front fender.

While I haven't seen the movie, I'm told a lot of period footage was incorporated into the film. Perhaps this is one such scene?

Not a Model A, maybe a Chevy or Plymouth. The 'snake' is the popular boa-constrictor horn - especially popular in the colonies
