Nice car! But, no offence meant to anyone, why is it parked in the mud under a fibreglass roofed shed, which cant offer sufficient protection from the elements?!!

Going by the surroundings, a proper shed/garage can surely be built for it.

This is a rare car to find in India. Alvis is right. As is Amol.

Assuming that the fittings on the car are original, as they left the factory, these are the observations I've made:

1) Notice the sealed beam headlamps-US Spec

2) The bee-hive parking lamps, again US Spec. And they are not from a Jeep, they are original but the chrome base and seal are not original.

3) The 3 piece bumpers are correct for an early car, though the bumper guards are missing.

4) The front fender crease above the wheel arch doesn't have the chrome strip, indicating it's not a 220S.

5) Notice the double horizontal chrome strips running the length of the lower part of the fender and doors, cant be a 219 as they had only 1 strip like the 4 cylinder cars.

Conclusion- It can't be a 219 or 220S. The car should be a 220a as Alvis has said.

I love the colour too.

This is a Gullwing to be distressed. Actually the body is being crushed.
Mercedes Benz values their designs and does not like replicas like this fibreglass Gullwing. What happened is that someone in Germany created this thing and sold it to a Russian. While being exported, the customs were alerted by the low value which made them investigate. When found to be a replica, Mercedes Benz saw to it that the body was removed and the shell was crushed in a 30 ton press. Ouch. The chassis was then given back to the owner.

Crosthwaite and Gardiner of UK who officially recreated those Auto Union racers also built a Mercedes Benz racer and Mercedes is very upset about that. It seems that German courts gae Mercedes some copyright protection on the Gullwing design.

Cheers harit

Harit, If I were Daimler AG i would scap that horrible thing too. Friends of mine have built 3 replicas of the W194 Gullwing. The First gullwings as raced in 1952 . There are almost perfect recreations and worth as much as the real things because the only difference is the chromemoly chassis and the higher quality welds achieved with better Equipment than Daimler had back then.

I am not clear about the side of the steering wheel. Straight from the factory, OK. Then to USA, also OK. But RHD? Looking at the blanked no plate, I think the car is RHD. Highly unusual if the car came into India via USA. Apro President of the Fiat section owned a Fiat 1100 brought in by a Naval Person which he brought in from USA, it was LHD.
Some mystery here.

Cheers harit

It is not unusual for new Mercedes to have been RHD and in America. I am rebuilding a W121 190SL for a customer which came from Buffalo New york, which is Right hand drive. I have seen many RHD 220SE Coupes there too and one 300SEL 6.3 in RHD. I am sure that soldiers based in the UK during the 1960's took advantage of the Daimler Benz scheme to buy cars at huge discount. They used the cars in the UK then took them home to USA when their tour of duty ended. This had been happening from the 1950's with a lot of service men in Germany buying pontons to take home. The West German government even supplied special rego plates for them. That stopped after 9/11.
the car is too nice to have come from Australia, many heckflossen here have bashed up bumpers and general wear from the high mileages achieved.
It hasn't enough rust to have been in the UK recently but the chassis number would reveal where it came from with a little detective work with the Mercedes Classic Center.

Fantastic! This looks a lot like my '63 albeit in a better cosmetic shape - Paint shade looks to be Mittelblau? If this car is in India - Can you find out where they intend to get the tyres from during restoration? Been searching high and low for a 185/80/R13 or 7,00 X 135JK but have had zero luck.

Here's another pic of my Benz!

I forgot about you car totally! the other day i saw a BRT registered mercedes same Blue at a Petrol Pump in Bombay and was wondering if your car had landed up in Bombay. Yours is also BRTXXX right? Tires for this size is very very difficult. Infact I have a 13" set lying with me which is 6-15-13 instead of 6-40-13 I used them for only a thousand kilometers and then moved on to whitewalls try getting the size if you can. They were MRF. Alternatively Contessa tires will also fit., though you will only get radials.

This is a shot of a gear lever on a 540K Mercedes that was show at the concours recently.

Any idea why it has two markings for the fourth gear. I didnt even know the 540K had a five speed gearbox, its amazing.
