Cedric, here are some new strange registration numbers on bikes to analyse - are they all accounted as Indian? The bike/bikes did tour around the world, though all these photos are shot in India.

MC 3154 (probably Madras?)
BA 750 or B 4750
XC 2884

Also an Albion lorry that seems to bear an early Calcutta regn.

Karl,
The 3 bikes (which appear the have very slight differences I think like the sticker on the sidecar mudguard) are probably British registrations I think.
XC is not a known code and as all letter pairs had some relevence to the name of the place they were registered in, I do not think India ever had letter pairs that started with X.
BA 750 (I think rather than B4750) is also not a code I know of and MC 3154 could be a Madras City number from pre 1939.

I just feel that they are more likely to be UK numbers than Indian.

As for the Albion, I am sure this is a British Army in India number since the people are military, the truck is a military type and in the full size picture, the WD arrow can be seen before the first numeral. It is believed the first two numerals indicated vehicle type and the rest were serial.

Cheers
Cedric

Thanks Cedric.

Here is another one - an early Rudge motoricycle (Rudge Ulster/Rudge Whitworth? I forget.) This picture was shot at a vintage car and bike rally in Bombay a few years ago. Any idea where SSV registrations are from? Sikkim perhaps?

This is from Saurashtra, and so was the Rudge.
BTW, many years Nitin Dossa got a "Rugby" tourer from Saurasthra also with an SSV number. The car was complete, but needed to be rebuilt. I had seen it outside his home, complete. Then it went to a prominent garage, and now some remnants are lying in the countyside. A sad end to Indias only known Rugby, at least to me.

Indrojitsircar,
I have PCx as being Punjab from 1973-79. Does that fit with the type of scooter? M was quite often used for motorcycles in various states.
Cheers

Hi everyone

Well we need to address another contadiction. Now in the VW's in india thread there is a pic of a 1974 Beetle cabrio with a BLB 460 number on it and a 1920's aubun has BLB 1818.Now i think BL was told to be a bengal registration and it was pointed out that it was changed to WB in 1957.Now the question i have is did another state also have the same BL series that existed in the 1970's?here is a pic of the cars i am reffering to.

However if you say the red plate has been on it for longer than the CAT series existed, we need to ask the owner what it does mean and I can add it to the list! :-)
I can't really see the registration having royal connections. The car might have royal connections but under a different registration I would guess.
Cheers
Cedric
The vehicle might have been taken out to a Gulf country for a exhibition?

Initially in Karnataka the registration was MY- for Mysore State. When the state became Karnataka the Reg. was CA_-XXXX (in Bangalre) untill they started with tha KA-XX-XXXX and so on. In the early 80s it was still CA_-XXXX in Bangalore.

Only possibility is that the vehicle might have been bought from another state and re-registered in Bangalore in the late 70s / early 80s.

This James bike was on display in Coimbatore

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/vintag...talk-town.html

It sports an RYJ regn - where is that series assigned to?

Karl,
RYJ does not appear in my 1902 list and RY is not a 1939 or 1947 series. I would have to guess that it is:
a) a made up number for display,
b) a UK number,
c) a mistake for RJY that is a 1939 & 1947 series,
d) an unknown pre 1939 series

I think the owner may be the only one to know the truth on this one.

Cheers
Cedric
