Yes, it is of Mangalore / Udupi as Udupi was part of Mangalore till it became separate district in 1997.

Some of Mangalore RTO registration series (subject to correction) as I remember.......

MYX.....1950's
MYG......1960's
MEX......Early 1970's
MEG......Late 1970's and early 80's
CTA ....1982 - 1986 ( think so)
CRX..... 1986 - 1989 (think so)
KA 19 .....1989 Nov onwards

Next time when I visit RTO, will try to gather more information on Mangalore series numbers.

Cheers

Harit,
That is a Nepal plate. Almost certainly a private plate as the military ones had a logo on them as well as far as we know. I can't tell from the picture what the letters are above the number that would tell us the town name. I am almost certain that the vehicle is a GAZ69 4x4.

If you think I can make anything more of the picture, send the best scan you can to me please.
Cheers
Cedric

My question - would not re-registration (after N number of years) compulsorily force you to relinquish that number?)
Mysore State Was "MY_ XXXX".

MYE would be late 1950's Karwar, as mentioned by Imperial S.A. in post #285.

Gentlemen,
I seek help again. Well, I seek help from Delhi members with good memories
I now have 3 photos of DAQ 0391, 1154 and 2543. I have no photos of any other DA series
My list has DA, DB and DD as being issued from 79 onwards. I have pictures of various DB and DD series but why only DAQ?
Was it a special series for something? Does anyone remember any other DA series?
The three photos I have are a 1930s car (0391) so obviously a reregistsed one, a close up of a rear plate (1154) on what might be an Amby, and a pair from a collection (2543). These don't give me much in the way of clues to go on.
All help gratefully appreciated.
Cheers

Strange, I went through my notes and I too only have DAQ 391 from the DAx series. Incidentally the car, a Chrysler, used to belong to BHPian Awini, and was I think initially Cawnpore registered. Maybe he can tell us more about the number.

Another type of number plate, appears to be UP70AK or AM.
This must be pre 1920.
Picture was taken near Nashik, and it says Construction work Nashk railway.
As per Wiki, Nashik Road station was built in 1862. Maybe this work is for some additional lines. So perhaps someone from Nashik can first tell us what rail lines are there, Nashik - Mumbai, any others? And then try to find out when these were built.
The car may have been an early Dodge or Chevy.

Cheers harit

Hi harit, this must be nashik to daund which is a meter gauge line. Nashik mumbai was developed by britishers as nasik was a hill station and devlali was and is a military hub, thers still a dodge lying around in nashik which was owned by Dada saheb phalke father of indian cinema. Sorry to say that there are still few antiques lying around in taters or shades of those who least care about it

Harit,
In the 1902 system the vehicles in UP (United provinces of Agra & Oudh) and BO (Bihar & Orissa) both had letters before and after the number.
There were many UP serial letters to indicate the town of registration and the A pairs were:
Agra AA
Allahabad AD
Aligarh AH
Almora AM
Azamgarh AZ

For me, it is probably UP70AH or AM.

As far as we know, the system carried on until 1935 in BO and 1939 in UP.
There could be more letter pairs that we do not know about - I have 50 letter pairs listed in UP.

Good find young sir!
Cheers

Gentlemen,
A friend in Russia sent me this picture today from the website of the Federal Security Services there. These are plates that have been used on the Russian president's car in various countries.
Seoul, Korea
India
Poland
Brasil
Cuba

I have no idea when the Ru president visited India but this is what he got. Bit mundane really!
Cheers

I do not think that India issued registration plates for visiting dignitaries cars for short visits. The registration procedure is too cumbersome, and by the time the formalities are completed the Russian President would have been back home. Very few dignitaries bring their cars with them, one is the American President. Doubtfull they gave him a number plate.

Also, this registration DDB is a standard common folks series, not a diplomatic one. Makes this very doubtful.

Cheers harit

Another type of number found on an old picture, Navsari 132.
Was not aware that Navsari also had a separate set of registration.
So we have Kutch, Jamnagar and Navsari. Saurashtra also had the SSV series. Any more?

Cheers harit

Harit,
Those are the only ones I know of also. I am surprised to see the name in full actally and just wonder if it could be a state car. Am I right that it is on a pretty 'posh' car and not the sort of thing a commoner would have?
Cheers
