Luckily some pre-restoration photos were taken, and they show 2 different plates, both quite distinctive.

The yellow plate with 4 digits (2349) seems correct for early Hyderabad plates, but at the bottom are the words "Atraf Balda", and another number is painted on the fender, A.B. 265.

A bit of googling tells us that "Atraf Balda" was the erstwhile capital of Hyderabad State.
LOL,"Atraf Balda" was certainly not the "erstwhile" capital of Hyderabad State.

The terms refers to the areas surrounding the municipal limits of Hyderabad which was the capital.

The term Atraf means around and Balda is short for Baladiya which means municipality, so cars located outside the city municipal limits but within a certain area of Hyderabad were registered as such.

Cheers

The old series BYJ (erstwhile registration series of Bombay State, Nagpur city) has been revived in Bangalore - clicked during my recent trip:

Thanks for clarifying. This is what I was reading earlier

Atraf-i-Baldah or just Atraf Baldah district was the capital of Hyderabad state. It consisted of seven talukas during the reign of the Nizams, rulers of Hyderabad State.

BYJU's is actually pretty famous as an IIT Coaching Institution- Although I don't recommend them. Quite useless.

Let me hazard a guess where this pic was taken: You were heading towards city, from the airport, right?

Some more gems from the Heritage Transport Museum's superb collection - really a must visit.

A Pontiac (1941?) from erstwhile Bengal.

An early American Tourer (Hudson?) with a Madras registration

Another Tourer with a pre-39 Bombay registration. The car may be a Graham Paige?

Possibly the same car seen here.

The description reads

Quote:
Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister, getting into his car after a rousing reception by villagers on his way from Darjeeling to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, which he visited in April, 1952.

Any idea where RC 935 would be from? This picture was most likely taken in India.

Karl,
This is a Rangoon (Burma) number from probably just after WWII. The numbers went from RA to RD from what we know and it was from when Burma was part of British India until 1947.
Cheers
