Cedric, IMHO for Bombay there were registrations starting BOM 1234, then BOM Z 1234, then BOM dropped off and continued with single alphabets till 1939. So, between BOM and Z was BOM Z.

This must be a Bengal plate, BLC 7604. Any comments?

Harit,
Well, I have a few photos of BOM Z numbers all of which look 20s or 30s to me. A photo of yours BOM Z 9999 is a 1932 car I believe. I have only one photo of Z on it's own - Z 39 1932 Nizam State Railway Bus.
There is also an old 1960 report without photo that Z-1200 was seen on a Hyderabad bus. However we should probably discount that I think.
There is also a report (I got on here I think) that in about 1933, all vehicles were re-registered to probably X or W I think. I have a photo of Y 2420 said to be taken in 1932.
I would have to say that from photos, There is no Z alone series and the few that existed probably just has their BOM left off?

I have BLA to BLD as the 1939 Bengal Calcutta private vehicles and then again issued to Maharashtra 79 onwards with all suffix letters.

Cheers
Cedric

Attached are pictures of W, X and Y registrations - all on RR cars taken around the Bombay / Bhor Ghat area.

The Napier with the "Z" (or is it BOM-Z ?) was taken in Chandni Chowk, Delhi ca 1924. But the same car was also photographed in Bombay - it must have been a company demonstration car.

W-1088 is the ex-Kalat RR PII.

Travancore,
It certainly seems that the letters used when they re-registered must have been T or N. Interesting.
Many thanks for the photos.

Hi Cedric, Please refer to page 25 of this thread, post no post no 367, (http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/vintag...ml#post2156886 (Early registration numbers in India)). That post needs a lot of THANKS also to Karl, these are my photos but he spotted that these are of the same car. I don't think that 'Z' was ever stand alone.
BTW, did you have BLC before?

It will be BOM z 7436, you can already see that the z character size is smaller.

Hi again Cedric, I have not clearly understood what you mean. After BOM and BOM z, all registrations were redone in around 1932/33, and apparently they started with X, Y, and we had W, T, N etc. The last series was K. T & N came subsequently, they were not the first in re-registration.

Attached is a new one I just got, and Austin 7 sedan registered RC-9. Where is this? The gentleman with the car could pass of as an Indian. There are two photos, the second with the gent is a bit out of focus.

Cheers harit

Harit,
That was the first BLC I have seen.
Going by dated photos, Y was the first single letter, then X then W, T, N, K.
Looking again at the photos, I think the first series for re-registering must have been W.

RC-9 is Rangoon (Burma). R, RA and RB were issued when it was still part of British India but in 1937, Burma was split off and administered separately.
Cheers
Cedric

I may be wrong but I suspect this is not BLC but DLC- Delhi. Moreover, considering that this is a 1948 Hillman Minx, the BLC series of erstwhile Bengal, if am not mistaken, were no longer existent then?

If you look closely, the letter B is clearly visible. We have seen cars of the 1940s with BLx regn, including a 1947 Rover.
