The most exciting aspect about this event is it will showcase India on the world vintage car event calender ! Obviousy it will take some serious machinery to get invited to participate. This is more along the lines of Pebble Beach where you can't just buy an entry.

There's a reasoning behind these kind of events too. There's always a theme associated with these events and the selection committee usually showcase a marque or two as the main theme.

Most enthusiasts will be familiar with the fact that desirability and rarity of an automobile is always a criteria when it comes to selection for such events. Also the condition of the car plays a role.

When I saw the Jodhpur Delahaye I almost fell to my knees in awe. Now finally this stunner will be there on the lawns for the world to see.

I haven't asked but I hope Gondal comes with the pair of Jags, the 300 SL and the gorgeous Delage

I wonder if the Jamsahib of Nawanagar is attending with his Jags. Perhaps his Lanchester?

There are just so many gorgeous cars in India. I think it will take years and years before they are all showcased.

From the little I've heard about the event it will move town too for the forthcoming events, now isn't that exciting!

Let the good times roll !! India deserves recognition. After all so much of the Rolls Royce and Bentley legend hinged on the patronage of wealthy Indians

Its about time the world community of vintage car lovers congregate in India to enjoy and acknowledge the masterpieces that survive here. And more importantly the owners of these masterpieces get recognition across the globe!

Just saw a news clip on the net which states the Gondal 300 SL, the Delage D8 and the 35 Packard rumble seat coupe will be featured!!! So my guess wasn't too far off

DKG bhai,

The Mumbai octroi department is waiting with bated breath as much as enthusiasts to levy an entry charge onto these cars, naturally they will not be driven across the check naka. There are issues involved, and knowing royalty upclose and personal, its a highly hit and miss formula.

It's indeed a difficult thing to transport a collection to Bombay and back, with insurance issues, octroi, (Mumbai with its assorted issues within the polity)

Its cartier, and its a democracy not kingdoms across Rajasthan Gujarat and the north.

Sigh, is all i can say.

As far as I know cars being trucked across the state for repairs or display do not attract any levies. That applies more for cars for resale. I sent a car from MP to AP and didn't pay a penny to anyone.

Besides the organisers I'm sure would look into the modalities of arranging for cars to be brought into Bombay and sent back out.

I would not think so mmmjgm. This has not been faced by me at any time. cars do come in from all over India. Some cars are driven across the check naka. i know one person who drives or has his car driven from his home town in another state into Bombay for the rallies.
The vintage and classic car group of collectors is a close knit group where it is not difficult to comunicate and pass messages across. there is no hit and miss formula here. it is a hit all the way and besides it is being orchestrated by one of the Finest person from the Circuit. i would expect the finest cars to be there for the event.

The cars would be transported as per the owners convinience so there are no issues regarding anything. Owners as per my understanding have been invited so do dont expect entire collections from one person. There would be one or two cars from various collectors that would be there.

I did not follow what you meant to say with the highlighted part?? what i gather is that the Royal cars does not mean from Royalty that cartier would get the cars. these are cars that were once part of the royal garages and have found their way to private coolections.

My info may be outdated on the octroi part, I stand to be corrected if wrong, however in the past a lot of my friends who are royalty, have brought down cars, and the transporters and octroi agents have always advised to drive the cars into Bombay.

DKG - Octroi is yet active in cities in Maharashtra, if you enter Bombay, you need to pay octroi or get some form (for exemption from octroi) where an escort joins the truck (this is what I read last) and escorts the truck if you are transiting Bombay to the last octroi check post.

Speedy - knowing a lot of royalty I know for a fact that post Independence, how the cars have languished. Many exotics of great makes have gone to waste, just rotted away, by fear of taxation or some stupid rule put in place to tax the Royalty during those times (wealth tax, etc etc)

Cartier would not get the cars naturally, you cannot export the exotic cars. They are so called "National Heritage" (tongue in cheek).

My disappointment was upon the fact that had the kingdoms yet been in existence, these states would have been completely different from what they are right now.

Gondal for example were the George Soros/great investors of the turn of the 19th century, Gondal was a tax free state thanks to their financial planning, its also rumored that they owned a large chunk of GM shares at that point.

Its because of that financial prudence is that they are enjoying the exotic cars, I doubt if left to the hands of the govt, things would remain the same.

Cheers

There is no octroi on cars brought in to Mumbai for vintage car rallies driven in or otherwise, the octroi department is pretty symphathetic to the cause of vintage and classic car enthusiasts. I have expereienced this myself when my car was brought on a truck from karnataka, the octroi officer insisted that i should just go without paying octroi as he thought the car was being brought in for a rally. But because i was going to register the car in Mumbai I volunteered to pay a very reasonable octroi for the record.

Ok Some of the cars that have come for the event.
Two Rolls Royces from the Udaipur stables, The 680k, Jaguar XK120 and a Lagonda from Delhi. There are 8 cars resting in the trucks and would be offloaded tommorrow morning. I would be going for the offloading of the Delhi cars, so would post pictures then.
