Friends, in view of the need for substantial sponsorship for transportation and stay costs on account of outstation participation, for the first Novotel event we will start with local enthusiasts.

The event will be broad based allowing a wide spectrum of participation.

Hopefully in years to come we can invite outstation participation.

The event will be based between the two properties and finally we have a gorgeous "vintage car friendly" road between the two properties on which to go for a lovely drive.

We are also planning on introducing a very transparent rating system purely to help owners know areas that require improvement. We will also use it for class prize selection.

This will be a fabulous event and a great funfiled day for all of us.

Will inform you guys on the dates as soon as they are finalised.

The Novotel Vintage Car Show will be held on 14th March at Novotel Airport as indicated by the organisers. Apparently it coincides with the innauguration of that hotel.

Just this past Sunday I took my green Packard out for a long drive on the highway from Gachibowli toward the airport and found that stretch to be just the perfect drive for a grand old car. For quite sometime now the traffic has become a huge turnoff in bringing an 18 footer out onto the roads. But this Sunday I had a big smile across my face as I could relax and enjoy the drive and not have to worry about the usual traffic.

It would be such a wonderful sight to see many of Hyderabad's beauties ambling along the wonderful stretch for a fun filled day out at airport Novotel

Interested participants (cars only) may please start adding your name in here so we can set the ball rolling.

Sounds like the beginning of something great! Will see if my good wife is interested in coming and I would love to do a "walk about' with our Fiat 1100 but think it is a little to early for that kind of a long run.

I was reading all the thoughts and plans and having been a judge at the Statesman Rally here and in Delhi and having competed in a number of Concours in Can. & US, think that some considered, thoughtful work will have to be done for the "judges guidelines' to make it work to every ones satisfaction.

The biggest difficulty is the range of cars and the lack of knowledgeable people, some of the best would be those who have been restoring cars and understand the challenges in breathing life into the odd ones where so little is known about them let alone find the parts. Are you considering someone from the out of town? I will check if I have a copy of the Jaguar Clubs judging sheets, extremely detailed and not applicable for you but a good reference. Suggest you contact the various Concours Events and ask for copies of their guidelines. Once it is all sorted out it could be posted for use by Events all over India. Definitely a long term project.

Definition of two types of judges; ( i've met a few of them)
Generalist: Someone who knows less and less about more and more until they know nothing about everything.
Specialist: someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing!

It has been interesting spending time here in Calcutta with a number of the restorers and I am finding that I have become privy to "inside" knowledge that some times when judging I have a conflict of interest. It is most interesting to see a what lengths some of the competitive, competitors go to to win trophies!

The other issue is the creation of a range of "Trophies" that will cover the diversity of the event. I will send you a list of the Statesman's trophies for Calcutta and Delhi for your reference.

The longest Journey starts with the first Step and Rome wasn't Created in a Day! I am sure this first event will be great and will improve each year, make sure that you who are setting the wheels into motion enjoy yourselves!

There is a comprehensive article prepared here

So, DKG, not to stir up a hornet's nest, but what will you allow, and what won't you?

John its not easy.

The issue of judging invariably creates a flutter after every rally and there surely is ample heartburn.

A 100 point system will atleast be a good way to start bringing in some form of standardisation of assessment of cars. Even the owners can retain the booklet evaluating their car. It would actually help in improving restoration detaiiling.

I have broached the subject with the organisers and they seem open to the idea of starting a standard evaluation system.

As the event needs to cater to the objectives of sponsors it will necessarily be broadbased allowing for much wider participation

Thanks for the comments, I checked out the JCNA site and they have an extensive site on running a concours, however couldn't find the scoring sheets, might be buried somewhere, but emailed and old friend from Pittsburgh that heads up this section to send me copies.

PLEASE CHECK OUT THE JCNA SITE, ONE OF THE BEST AROUND!

As in restoring and concours, we have to be guided by the customer and try and give them the best value for their money.

The new Hyderabad - Bangalore highway is almost completed and we finally have a spectacular stretch of road to enjoy our cars and bikes on.

The Novotel event as per the request of the hotel mgt has been shifted to the weekend of 21/22nd March.

For a select few participants we are planning a 100 km drive too, details of which I will post shortly. The idea is to encourage owners to come out with their precious beauties and have fun driving them on awesome roads.

The event aside I would urge all enthusiasts to experience the new highway as it surely is one of the best roads any city in India can ever desire.

The good times are here !!

As I understand the organisers will limit participation to vintage/classic cars only as of now.

So people participating in the display Sunday morning can join the drive which should take place early afternoon.

Hats off the organisers for taking a strong stand and not diluting it with any random expensive car.

That said, it's high time Hyderabad had an exclusive Exotic meet. Although I have my doubts on how many of them will turn up..
