Apparently there was a 'Kathiawar Motors' supplying cars in Rajkot and Gondal. This lovely badge was seen on a 47 Hindustan 10.

Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India-photo.jpg

Similar designs were seen on cars from other dealerships as well, I guess it must be standard issue from Mobiloil.

The rightmost picture interests me the most. In that picture, what is that American (ish) car beside the Mark I/ Landmaster. It seems to be of the Sixties or the early Seventies.
It seems to have fins. (to some extent). Could anyone have a guess as to what car it could be ?

Cheers!

Hi, can you post larger images?

It could be a Ford Zephyr Mark III, made from 1962 to 1966. A clear picture would be helpful to confirm this.

Cheers harit

The first Picture is the interior of their showroom in MG Road Trivandrum - bang opposite the Keral State Secretariate. The one with the schooter behind the glass - I think is Quilon and the one with scooter in the open door used to be the one in Kochi (Cochin).

The showroom interior photos if I am not mistaken are from mid - 1970s when the Police Department was buying the station wagon/estate Ambys for their use and I think you can see one in there with the "Police Blue" colour"

The workshop pictures are their workshop which used to be there at Palayam, opp the Kerala University Libarary - these days there are few fast food type restaurants working in that premises.

They had the dealship for Enfield in South Kerala other than HM and in North Kerala they had Lambetta as well (In south Kerala the Lambretta dealer was an outfit called "Travancore Automobiles"

Marikar Motors was started by a person who was far ahead of his times in manyways - Late Mr. Hassn Marikar. He loved good things in life, lived his life well and contributed a lot to the society through his charity works and was a strong pillar of the "Rotary Club" movement in Trivandrum

Hi Harit. Sorry but that's how the image was when posted on fb. Making it larger would tend to distort the clarity I guess.

Good writeup Ram! The one with the Lambretta in the doorway seems to be Calicut (look closely

Habib (Marikar) was a good family friend. I still remember taking delivery of our Mk III (KLV-1734). The narangas (limes) under the four wheels and the whole deal.

I couldn't itch to get behind the wheel, but Dad being a stickler for rules, wouldn't take the car out with a "For Regn" plate!

I think this link has been posted somewhere before:

Milestones
1930 - Dealership of International Trucks
1934 - Dealership of Ford Cars
1943 - Starts importing and marketing Royal Enfield Motorcycles
1961 - Dealership of Royal Enfield Bullet Motorcycles
1970 - Dealership of Tractors from Escorts Ltd.
1980 - Dealership of KAL Three Wheelers
2001 - Dealership of Honda Scooters
2002 - Dealership of Skoda Cars
2010 - Dealership of Premium Brands PORSCHE and NISSAN.

Hindustan Motors & Lambretta missing from the list !

Perils of not yeilding to the demands of the body systems (read it as full time use of reading glasses)

I thinks it was a wise decision as those days some of the cops would earmark such cars for special treatment

Yes, its rather strange - that they didn't mention HM and Lambretta. HM, they were the sole dealers in Kerala, till Geo Motors Cohin broke the monopoly in 1978-80 with a 2nd dealership in Cochin and one in Idukki, which was the newly formed district then.

: Does anyone know, what has happened to the 'Bombay cycle and Motor Agency Limited' ? And also Dadajee Dhackjee, at Sandhurst road, Bombay.

They used to specialize in American cars, and later Fiats/Premiers. Dadajee Dhackjee were Hillman dealers, and later Mahindra dealers, I believe.

I imagine that BCMA would have been Premier dealers, until the late Nineties, when Premier closed down.

What is their present situation? Have they shut down? I hope not.

Cheers!

Kasli,

No need for Fintail to take any offence. Even I had this thought in my mind, when I was reading his posts in this thread and in some of his other posts. You just vented it. He seem to be a avid auto enthusiast though seeing his interests in various threads.

The Porsche dealership is closed now and Porsche is selling their cars through EVM.

Thank you for sharing the details.

I am sure you will be having more to say about Kulathungal Pothen. I have read that Mr. Pothen always travelled in brand new Mercs. I also have shared his snap in a Green Ponton in the classics of Travancore,Cochin and Malabar thread.

Could you please explain his business in automobile sector ?

Mr Joseph Pothen (I think I have the name right) - was another person who would fit in to all what I said about Mr. Hassan Marikar. I wouldn't be wrong to say as stalwarts of Automobile business in Travancore (along with TVS), they contributed immensely in "automobilisation" of the area.

As you pointed out they were the dealers of Mercedes in Travancore. As such its highly probale that the legends about his travels in "new Mercedes" are al true

Their main "cars" operation was in Trivandrum - the show room was in MG Road - opp of the Pothy's/Nikunjam City Square - which is in my family property (I still own some land there along with others). As a child everytime I am in that area, I was allowed to Kulathungal show room so that I can have a look at the cars there. Though by then the Mercedes dealership was not with them (may be as the cars were not allowed to be imported and also due to financial hasseles the family had in late 1940s due to some political differences with the "infamous Sir C P Ramaswamy Iyer - then Dewan of Trvancore) - they were servicing the Pontons in the area. I still remember a "Nair" uncle who used to answer my questions with a lot of patience and forebearance

At that time they were the sole authorised dealers of "Tata - Benz" vehicles.

The "workshope/service centre" was where the "Saphalyam" complex of the Trivandrum City Corporation/Govt of Kerala stands today, at Palayam. So you can imagine how big the workshop must have been.

They were pioneers in "auto financing" in Travancore through their outfit MGFC (Motor and General Financing Corporation).

They also had considerablly big operation ins commercial vehicle side in Cochin and Kottayam

I am sure that there are other seniors here you can add more details to this

You would be aware Mr. Pratap Pothen the malayalam film actor is his son

Best Regards & Drive Safe

Ram
