In the 1920s you could buy your Ford in Nagpur from Dhannaram Heeralal & Son.

Does anyone recollect the coachbuilder James of Bombay? Operating at least in the 1920s.

Also to add to the list in the 1930s there was The Bombay Garage as authorised distributors for Chevrolet and Vauxhall. Later on I'm sure they expanded to more brands.

Here's a rare one - seen at the superb Heritage Transport Museum in Delhi

The agents for Daimler in India were
  • Bombay Motor Car Co., Ltd. - catering to Bombay, Baluchistan, Punjab
  • T. L. Pratt - catering to Bengal, Bihar, Orissa
  • Simpson & Co. - catering to Madras
  • Clive Engineering Co., Ltd. - catering to Madras

In this undated ad for a Chevrolet (probably dating to the early 1920s), the agents are mentioned as 'Eduljee & Co., Motor Engineers & Coach builders' - seems like they made bodies as well.

Bombay, 1952.

The Bagai Motor Service seems to have been big in Delhi too. We have seen pics of an Ambassador with their dealership badge.

Dadajee Dhackjee published these two advertisements in the late 1930s, being sole agents for Mercedes-Benz and Packard. The lady with the Mercedes is actress Durga Khote, and I assume the lady with the Packard too must be an actress.

Allenberry & Co. Ltd. advertised as being agents for Morris, Wolseley, Riley, MG and Morris Commercial. I think I remember them being agents for GM as well.

It rather looks to me as a GM pavilion in an Industrial Expo of sorts, probably held at New Delhi.

You are absolutely right. After some more research, it appears that this was indeed taken at:

Quote:
MANUFACTURERS’ INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION DELHI, The first Manufacturers’ Industrial Exhibition was held at Ramlila grounds Delhi in March-April 1950. The gods exhibited therein included a vast variety of Indian manufactures ranging from bamboo or cane baskets to finest types of textiles, woollen articles, rugs, carpets, electric accessories, fans, cycles aluminum wares, tractors and Motor cars. Etc. The General Motors Stall in the Exhibition.

Distributors for International trucks were the quaintly named Triangular Motors Ltd., Queen's Road, Bombay. Sub agents are also listed in the ad.

This ad for a motorcycle repair workshop appears in a book dating to 1939.

I wonder they can claim copyright infringement to today's Tata Motors

In the same publication was this nicely illustrated ad, showing the before and after comparison of a repaired 1930s Ford. It appears to be registered T 6092

This is an interesting ad

Dealerships, Coachbuilders, Vehicle Assembly in India-truck.jpg

While Dodge, Fargo and DeSoto are all brands of the Chrysler Corporation, they were clearly marketed by separate dealers - in this case in Bombay the Dodge by Bombay Cycle, Fargo by Kandawalla and DeSoto by International. The DeSoto is also clearly a generation older.
