The Bugatti Royal was rare, only 6 built and now some more replica's were created, but the engine was a rail car engine, not aircraft.
Ettore had visions for his car, just as grandiose as the car itself. With the result (also helped by the great depression) that few were sold.

"Intended for royalty, none were eventually sold to any royals, and Bugatti even refused to sell one to King Zog of Albania, claiming that "the man's table manners are beyond belief!"

Some of the "left over" engines I believe were used to power railcars.

At least one cannot dispute on the Bugatti Royale. The rarity is from number of cars produced for that particular model, I guess. Anyways please share your thoughts

Hi,

Both the following articles appeared in the Deccan Herald some time ago.

In the glitterati section;

Media Matter Related to Vintage and Classic Cars-glitterati.jpg

This picture was part of an elaborate article on Deogarh. The only text with regards to cars is as follows;

"With a treasure of around 30 cars, we were taken around the garage and introduced to the sturdy army trucks named Thapero, Dhamero and Bhachero (a pun on Pajero). A fancy Austin had been renovated into Car-O-Bar (a bar on wheels)."

This photo has been seen before, maybe in this thread or forum. The Delhi number plate was also discussed at that time.
It was a DKW or a Auto Union product.

I had posted it years back. The car is a Hansa. A similar one is in Bombay, Punjab registered.

Interesting article that auction House Christie's is looking at India.

Some interest points in this article

"There are a few new categories that we had not even thought of in India yet. For instance, there is a huge reservoir of classic cars and firearms here.........

Earlier this year, the commerce ministry gave its nod to freely import cars manufactured prior to 1950. The custom duty is, however, very high at over 200% of the value of the car. However, there is confusion on how a car will be valued. ......

Titus is currently negotiating a deal with the owner of a 1931 Cadillac in the US. "I am hoping to bring that car to India by December," he says. He is expected to spend about $60,000 on buying the car, 220 % import duty, besides shelling out another Rs 50 lakh on restoration.

I found this by chance. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi had a "Duke" and a Packard. Maybe they meant Buick, a non-car guy can make such a mistake. And we all know about his Fintail Mercedes.
A truly great vocalist.

Media Matter Related to Vintage and Classic Cars-austin-customs.jpg

"Fin. Min./1949,A25eMotor Gas Case: On January 18, 1949, as a result of information received by the Intelligence Branch of the Bombay Custom House on Austin A-40 motor car which arrived by the S.S. “DUMRA” from KOWELT was detained before clearance from the Docks. A through examination of the car revealed gold bullion and coins very cleverly concealed in the radiator. The water compartments at the top and at the botton of the radiator had been broken open at the joints and re-soldered after the gold was concealed therein. The strainer under the radiator filled with water. A total quantity of 4136.10 tolas of gold valued at Rs. 4, 75, 651/- was recovered from the radiator. The gold and the car were confiscated under the provisions of the Sea Customs Act. It was impossible to trace the importer, the name furnished in the Import documents was found to be bogus."

If the valuation is as per the purchase price, there are some interesting pre-1950s vehicles for $1000-1500 on eBay. Rs 80000

On Wheeler Dealers, he shipped (by boat) an Ambassador for 600, if I remember correctly, from Kolkata to England, don't recall the port. Rs 60000
(Don't know cost of transport via cheapest method from USA)

With 200% duty it would still be a lot cheaper than rust buckets on sale here for sky high prices. Rs 300,000

Total approx Rs 450000 to Rs 500,000.

Plus your restoration cost at a level of your choice:
1. Daily runabout
2. Show car
3. Finicky on going restoration that goes on forever
4. Museum/Garage Queen to add to the collection, cosmetically great but with no intention to drive it.
