Default Potential SCAM on importing Mustangs to India?

A vintage classic car broker dropped the following email. Just a heads up in case any of you were looking at importing Mustangs.

Quote:
Hi.
I've been working as Vintage and Classic Car Broker for sometime. I wanted to help you guys warn our community and especially Classic car lovers about a Fraud.

There's a Guy ,says he's from Delhi, He called me up a few days ago. He tells me that he has a few Mustangs that he is bringing down to India on NRI terms.(According to which you can Bring 1 car if you have owned the car for more than 2 years and have lived there for 2 or 5 continuous years.) But he says that the cars are stuck in San Francisco Customs Because some customs duties have to be paid. And that You have to pay Rs.3.50 lakhs in cash to him which he says he will pay to the Customs. Not only that,He is also asking for the Price of the cars too. 50% Cash 50% Cheque.

There are a lot of people out there looking for a Ford Mustang.
Personally, I'd never pay any advance cash unless:

1. The car is physically present in India + clean paperwork.

2. The organisation is well-reputed.

Classic Nigerian scam revisited. The storyline is pretty much the same: the whole family perished in a plane crash and $123,0000,000,0000 is rotting away in a Bank of Papua New Guinea account and you can claim this money if you can send us $1500 for making rubber stamps.

Replace plane crash with Mustangs and you are there.

Edit: any Nigerians/Guineans here, no offences please.

The INR 18,000,00,00 Veyron in Mumbai is LHD, IIRC.

If stuck in customs, it should have happened in port of entry. Not at the port of exit.

Why would anyone have to pay customs duty during export ?

Absolutely. Does anyone remember the joke about the muscle car which never existed. This was on the forum, and when people called they got some odd reply, it was not genuine. Or the joker posting pictures of a warehouse in Japan. Fake stuff. If done as a prank, sick joke. If a con job, then fools would fall for it.

Cars can get caught up in customs while leaving if paperwork is not in order, for example stolen cars. Insurance would have been paid, no owner to claim it.

No, even under TR officially no LHD allowed.

BTW, were those Mustangs 6 or 8 cylinder cars?

Cheers harit

I know there are many muscle car lovers in India and Mustang is dream car for many but paying advance of 3.5 L for car which you have not seen in person is insane unless you have that much amount laying to blow off

This is not as insane as you may think. I have bought most of my stuff blind, trusting people and have not been hurt bad. It is not amount lying to be blown off, it is playing a lottery where you think you can win as you are smarter. That is why it is important to hi-light this.
On a more serious note, you will see that the advance is a very reasonable 3.5L, compared to the total cost. This is how you get sucked in. A little bit of reasonable advance for "customs duty" (while being exported, mind you!!), then he will ask for petrol money to drive the Mustang up the ramp into the ship, then he will need money to feed the pet monkey of the captain of the ship, and so on. I am joking, but only partly. These cons go like this, ask for a bit, then a little bit more, and suddenly you find that he has 8 to 10 lacs of yours. If you read about such scams in the papers, this is how they do it.
One more thing. These scams are such that every now and then you need to be told about these things happening. It is nothing new, but we do sometimes forget in our excitement.
Have we all not heard: "If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is".
Good of GTO to bring this up to remind ourseves.

Cheers harit

Hi! Hope all is well.
Since you have seen pictures, can you tell which models are involved? 6 or 8 cylinders? Pre 1969? Just curious.

Cheers harit
