Re: The Statesman Concourse - Jan. 9th 2011 - Kolkata

Some more pics from my side. The event was great fun but was only let down by the usual poor judging. Imagine, the pink Fiat 500 with shoddy paint and in overall bad maintainence won the concours d'elegance in the classic section!

It was great to see Mr. Momen's mid-night blue Rolls Royce 25/30 on the day of the rally, now back in Kolkata. Equally impressive though not as beautiful was the Karnani's 25/30, resplendent in deep green, whos reported first owner was Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Shrivardhan Kanoria's stable was well represented with 9 outstanding cars. Call his restorations what you may, and I admit that some of his works in the past and present are not pure, but the man can make a humble Austin A40 or a Humber Hawk look like a million bucks, and IMHO he deserves accolades just for that. If there was any example of that famous phrase, mirror finish, it was true of all of Shrivardhan's cars.

The Plymouth coupe re-restored by Sanjoy and Rajiv Ghosh really caught my fancy; just loved the beautiful dials in the car.

Gautam Mukherjee outdid himself with 2 of his best Austin 7's in full brass regalia, a change from the past when all these parts were painted black. Even the tiny engines of these car gleamed like jewels.

Then of course was Gautam uncles Rover Custom (that's what I call it) which was a good case of a self made vintage car, and to be honest it was quite nice looking.

Unfortunately, Mr. Momen's lovely Bentley seemed to have received a recent coat of paint which was not very good and looked dull, and the car may not be in Kolkata for too long, which is sad, though I can't say this for sure.

I drove my friend's 1973 Volkswagen Beetle 1300S, the green super bug and boy is she a hoot to drive. With the 1600cc power plant and discs up front, she is better than a number of moderns.

Please excuse the quality of the pics, as I have still not bought a new camera.

Re: The Statesman Concourse - Jan. 9th 2011 - Kolkata

DKG, I did a little research on the lone Packard of the late P.D. Chitlangia and what I found out was that the reason why the radiator emblem says 'Packard London' is because it was probably ordered by an English gent and was given a coach built body by an English firm, though the owner's were at a loss as to which firm. I have asked them to send a copy of the chassis plate to the Packard archives to try and find out. Every other part of the car said 'Packard; Made in USA'.

Also notice Shrivardhans Austin 16 wears rear wheel spats; very unusual for an Austin, though the owner did say that it was ordered and used by an American gent, so that might explain it.

Some more pics from my side. Enjoy!

Re: The Statesman Concourse - Jan. 9th 2011 - Kolkata

Great pictures and some really well turned out cars to be seen. Restoration standards in India have indeed reached new heights and compare with others internationally.

The Chevy Big Six and teh Plymouth Coupe are cases in point here

is that NLA regestered Packard all original or an older restoration, looks well patinated.

Does anyone have any history on the SSI drop head and teh Alvis Speed 20 ?

Funny how the Plymouth looks Read / Black in some pics and Orange ? black in others.

That Army Sheerline was under restoration sometime ago if I am not mistaken, doesn't look restored to me

That bluish RR 20 really is begging for a makeover.

Also please post pics of all the other cars too.

Wasif,

The Packard has been wearing these colours since forever though it was given a new coat of paint 2-3 years back. The car is used sparingly, as the owner passed away some years back and the younger lot are not really interested in using the car.

The Army Sheerline was restored by Sanjoy Ghosh and is in much better condition than it used to be.

Momen's blue Rolls is in good condition, it's the pale shade of deep blue and my poor mobile camera that make it look like it needs a makeover!

The Plymouth is red/black.

The SS One seems fairly original; and as I have said earlier is a really rare car. No further history that I know of though.

The Alvis I think is a Speed 20, again no history that I know of. They both are from P.K. Mittal's stable.

Prithvi

Re: The Statesman Concourse - Jan. 9th 2011 - Kolkata

May I add a little comment, albeit cautiously. A lot of cars in Kolkata have been modified, and here in these pictures one can see that clearly. Look at the headlights of the Standard Coventry. The SS sports car has brookland type of screens, to me this car appears modified.
About 30 years a SS/Jaguar saloon was hacked and rebuilt as an SS 100, and it was passed on as such. That car is now in Hyderabad. Similarly, the only SS 100 now seen around belonging to Bollywood has had treatment done on its front wings. That car originated in Bengal, went on to Delhi and is now in Mumbai. There are some very fine cars, and they are restored very authentic, but then these aberrations are also there.
Those spats on this Austin?
KPS, there is/was a similar Skoda in Delhi, and there was a sporty Skoda in Bangalore which may now be with Mr. Hegde? There were three similar Skoda sports cars in India, basically open sports cars similar to MG TC.

Cheers harit

Re: The Statesman Concourse - Jan. 9th 2011 - Kolkata

Harit.

Admitted some o the cars in the show are a bit "customised" toput it mildly but surely this is te case ll over India.

There are some excellent well restored and some very nice orignal cars there too. The Packard is superb so isth Chevy and the Plymouth among others.

Tht SS 1 like the SS100 used to cme with two windscreesn, one the big full lenght one that could eb folded down and hen there would be th two small Aero screens also foldable but to use when the main screen is down.

I would love to see soem detailed pics of the SS and te Alvis, both are vey rar crsin India.

The 2.5 SS Sedan conversionthat is in Hyderabad was not really sold as a SS100 but was said to eb a SS Specal....the chassis is too long for anyone to thinks its a SS100 and the crocodile bonnet futher proves te point. Its again a customised car

If you recollect we had discussed last year too on the modification/over dressing and Chevy Big 6 was the case in point.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/vintag...ml#post1675183

Yes the Skoda in Dharmasthala would be of similar vintage but it a doctors coupe. Restoration is adequate for a display vehicle in a museum.
Another 30's Skoda sedan has moved from Bangalore to Goa. This car was in church for many years before bought by a priest who sold it on.

Cheers
