Default Hyderabad Collection-2

On a recent visit to Hyderabad, I was fortunate to meet one Mr. Rao and snoop around his collection. Since it was a whirlwind tour, heres a few pics that I could get.

Pride of place goes to a 71 Citroen DS. Launched in the 50s, the DS was a reasonably succesful car sold way ahead of its time. It created a storm when launched, in the form of a mock up put on display at the paris motor show. The wheel wells were enclosed to enhance the streamlined shape penned by Flaminio Bertoni.

Lovingly restored over some time, the car has all of its unique features intact, including hydro pnuematic suspension, semi auto gearbox and fuel injection systems in working condition. She really does move like a yaught, gently sailing over the kuccha roads we drove on.

These pics are with the car fully raised.

Here the car is fully lowered. Note how close the car is to the ground.

The trademark single spoke steering wheel, and brake "button", not pedal.

More to follow.

The rest of the collection that I saw were mainly unrestored cars, waiting in line. As the warehouse was packed, excuse the poor pics.

Late 50s Standard 10. One of 4-5 in the collection, he isnt sure how many he has.

1949 (?) Hindustan 10

Hillman Minx and 49 Morris Minor. (one of many around)

One of 3 Vauxhalls lying around. Seems to be a runner.

Oh the DS!! How I wish I owned one!

P.S. Karl, the DS seems to be a little patchy in the pics, what gives?

The DS was apparently some embassy car in Madras, then went through smoe hands with a sketchy history and was driven to Hyderabad before the restoration.

Yes Ishan, I too noticed the panel gaps. Remember, all doors are pillarless, so these occurences are common Id guess.

If I am right, it used to be bronze in colour. Seen it in Bangalore once 30 years ago

Theres was another early 60's DS in Bangalore, owned by a malayali planter married to an italian. rumour has it that he dismantled the suspension and could not put it back. It sat in the erstwhile Wheels garage for a long time. It used to run once in a while but after Wheels moved, it disappeared

A real curio was this rear engined air cooled Renault. Can anyone help me out identifying it?

A must in any collection, the good ol herald.

This ones for you V-16.

A couple of completely original 55/6 Fiat 1100s

One of many Morris minors. This ones a Tiger, OHV 1000cc, the final iteration.

Almost completed is this rear engined Fiat 600. Infact Fiat India has a restored car similar to this put on display at their factory.

It is a Renault Caravelle - if I am right you will see one in the Original movie - "The Day of the Jackal", when he strangles his hostess and steals her car to get to the station
