Default Used AT Sedan Dilemma- Corolla vs Verna vs City

Hello All,

I am in the market for a used sedan (AT) and found the following:

My driving - about 1500 kms a month (50% city, 50% highway - one intercity trip (Bangalore - Chennai) every month 750 kms approx.). Fully self-driven.

1) 2007 Corolla AT H4 1.8 (top end version), 22000 kms, Good condition, 7.6 lakhs. Color: Black

Pros: Loaded - Leather, Airbags, ABS, great comfort, bigger boot, reliability, lower maintenance costs (petrol + toyota), steering mounted audio controls
Cons: FE (city -8, hwy - 10-11). Out of warranty.

2) 2009 Verna Diesel AT SX ABS, 12800 kms, Good condition, 7.9 lakhs. Colour: Silver

Pros: Diesel FE (city -11, hwy: 13), 1 year warranty left
Cons: no airbags, no leather interiors, no steering audio controls

Related Question: Both the Corolla & Verna come with indash CD system (no USB/Aux). Is it possible to add an external USB/Aux input and Bluetooth phone integration (I guess Parrot is an option)

Suggestion guys? I plan to keep the car for 3-5 years.

Jayanth

I would suggest you go for the - 2007 Corolla AT H4 1.8. Good engine and a wonderful car to drive.

As for the head unit, you can replace it with a basic pioneer unit (please ask the ICE Gurus). You can even get a good double DIN system that would fit your dash.

The title also mentions City as an option, but you have not given any description about City in the body.

Consider the pleasure of the petrol (in terms of lower engine noise levels and vibration too) versus the economy of the diesel as a factor too. For frequent highway driving, the bigger car with airbags adds to the safety quotient. Have test driven demo cars of all 3 models in their AT guise, including fast runs on highways. The out of warranty part is a bit of a put off but the other one will also be in the same boat after a year.

Avoid the Verna AT. It has a power sapping 4 speed autobox with widely spaced gear ratios mated to narrow power band diesel engine, the result is not so great experience.

The NHC CVT has annoying rubber band effect, its best for just City use.

No comments on Corolla AT as i have not driven one but i have read good reviews despite the fact that it comes with a 4 speed box.
