Have you considered the IKON 1.6 ROCAM?.
  • Nice chunky steering and Amazing response.
  • Great power, especially low end grunt.
  • Great handling
  • Amazing rear seat comfort for such a good handler
  • Parts are still very much available
  • Decently affordable maintenance
  • Look great even now, atleast for me.
  • Get an additional boot, when compared to the palio.
You can easily get nice, well maintained '05 models for your budget.

@mb_jg and dhanush: Thanks guys - I'm keeping an eye open for the Ford 1.6, unfortunately - a few things playing against me on that front:

1 - Time: Not seeing good examples and need to settle on a good used car fast
2 - Budget: The really good ones are all fiestas and 3.5 lacs or above
3 - I keep seeing 1.4 diesels but am a petrol-head and only a good 1.6 will do among Fords

@prince_pervez: thanks - the Lancer is the best example I've seen since I started my hunt, and your input reinforced my confidence. At 2 lacs (negotiable another 15 - 20k), it seems the best bang for the buck. I need to move within the next 2 days before someone else makes a sweet deal.

Thanks for all your inputs, folks - it helped me greatly. Spent a tortuous 2 days deciding and finally a feature loaded 2001 Lancer (1.8 Lacs) won over a beautiful bright red 2006 Palio sport (2.3 Lacs).

Also, for the Palio I would have to deal with LTT issues (it is MH, I am in KA). the Palio is out-of-production while the Lancer is still in-prod.

Though a die-hard Palio lover and ex-owner, the trim level of the Lancer is far ahead for the price - power mirrors, tilt-steering, seat height, sliding cup-holders, left armrest, separate console-light switch, all sorts of safety alarms, auto-lock, huge boot, loads of rear legroom, loads of little cubby-holes for all the little knick-knacks, plush-er looking dash.

Only thing lacking was no real water-bottle holding space. But hey ...

The beauty has been kept pretty well, while I had the first scratch already (when parked!!) - a school kid on a bicycle hurtled around a turn and slammed into the rear right.

Now need to find a good mechanic in Blore, get a complete initial assessment from him, prioritize, check costs and start making her mine .

If any of you know a good referencible Lancer mechanic in Blore, I would be much obliged to get a contact.

Thanks again for all the advice and suggestions folks, and hope you're all driving safe and super!

Congrats on your buy steer4ever!!..

Well whatever the case, please change all the fluids, get the brakes/lines checked, wheel alignment done on your new ride - irrespective of the previous owner.

Thanks Dhanush - I'm scouting a good mech for the Lancer now in Bangalore - to get a full initial assessment.

300 kms done - rides and handles like a dream!! Returned 9.23 kms per litre in city driving with AC on ALL the time. I think as I get more comfy with the car I can push it towards 10.

Itching to get it out to the highway - but that will be after new footwear - current rims are 13" auras with 175mm tubed tyres. Planning to up it to at least 14# - probably Platis or Accelere's, and min 185mm tyres with decent profile (65 or above).

Please feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions on the alloys/tyres.

Also - is a free flow exhaust bad from an emission control perspective? Thinking of it but not at the cost of the occasional hassles with cops (if any).

Cheers!

Will improve handling, but deteriorate ride comfort.

Ripper gave you an exact idea about Lancer and I have to agree with him as I own one. In my case, finding a reliable mechanic was/is difficult but I will blame it on my poor initiative.

Sorry for the delay in response - I picked up the Lancer, and it's been a beauty.
It lacks the outright power delivery of the Palio 1.6 (also, the 1.6 is a good 11bhp more), but it overcompensates in absolute feel, the way she helps you understand every aspect of her - corners, comfort, handling, seating ergonomics, feature-set - awesome. Though I am much saner now, there is always the feeling that I can take her to the limit. With an FE of 12.2 (minimal AC - about 20% of the time), I could not have asked for more.

I will definitely put up some pics after the first cosmetic changes - planning to put in new seat covers and music system.

Upsized to Michelin Energy XM1s (185/70/R13) and they actually improved FE (probably due to the balance and enen grips - the earlier tires were unevenly bald).

Thanks a ton to everyone here - yes - we spoke about all my favorites - Ford/Fiat/Mitsu. I will keep posting progress and any advice I may need.
