The 2016 Auto Expo witnessed a total of over 6 lakh visitors , with a record 1.3 lakh visitors on Sunday, February 7 - the highest number ever recorded in one day at the show. With over 108 new products launched and unveiled, it had 65 manufacturers from across the globe exhibiting their products.

Hopefully we will have even better show this year with the launch of much anticipated India's own sports car.

Although Guenter Butschek and Mayank Pareek sounded positive about Diwali launch for Tata Nexon in their recent interviews during and after Geneva Motor show, considering the delays of their recent launches, Tata Nexon also would be a top launch at the Auto Expo.

Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda to skip Auto Expo next year.

The VAG group understandably with no new launches for India and no clear cut strategy drawn was expected to not participate.

All new launches (if at all they still exist in India then) will happen after 2019 and beyond!

I really see no reason why one would assume that the VW could pull out of India. Let's not assume everyone is going down the Chevy way, they were downright uncompetitive with their inferior products. VW on the other hand has great products and they certainly will launched several cars before 2019- New A6,A8, Skoda Kodiaq, VW Passat, etc to name a few. Hence I think their reason of ROI could be genuine and is something the organizers of the event should take note and correct before others start feeling the same.

Auto Expo 2018 reminds me. I spotted Tata Nexon in Expo 2016 in Delhi. Almost 2 years on , there is still no sign of this car. They move at the speed of glaciers. There are many like me who want a city run-about diesel mini-SUV with AT and there's nothing currently available in the market at around 10-12 L.
The wait for this car is getting highly annoying. Instead of alunching this first, they focussed on non-sellers like Hexa and Tiago and that sub-4 metre hatch.

And ditto with Hyundai Carlino. They displayed it in 2016 and will again display in 2018. Why not launch? But then again being a Hyundai, I have no hopes of seeing this car under 17 L. By the time Hyundai launches it, they will take Creta to 22 L mark and launch this at 17-18. And our auto press will somehow justify and say how reasonably it is priced.

Isn't the new Swift expected around september this year?

Honestly, Tata's pavilion was on of the best at Expo 2016. Of all the new cars they displayed, The Hexa, Tiago and now the Tigor are now on sale and all of them have been getting positive reviews. In Nexon's case, I think it was because they just didn't have the car anywhere close to production back in 2016. What they displayed was more of a concept. An idea.

Which is my biggest grouse with the Indian Auto Expo. Most of the cars on display are either wacko concepts that never go into production, or souped up versions of the cars already on sale. These souped up versions are also just for show and again hardly ever make it to showrooms.

It is only the one or two actual new car launches that take place at the Expo which are of any relevance to the car buyer. Otherwise, its just a massive exercise in corporate PR.

Not to mention, more niche models like the new A7, A5/RS5, the S variants of the SUVs, new Porsche Panamera models, and I'm sure there's a lot more. The ROI reason sounds genuine because let's be real here, at the auto expo most of the Audi/VAG group models only draw the photographers, not real customers. Hence their ROI could actually be measly compared to the Maruti Suzuki's and the Tata's.

Penny wise, pound foolish?

Who cares about ROI - as a major player, you simply cannot miss out on the biggest automotive event of 2 years.

VW has the Tiguan and could display the new Polo. Skoda has the all-important Kodiaq coming up. Audi has a load of new cars too. In fact, it's easier for VW as it can split the cost up of one mega stall between these 3 brands. Additionally, it can throw in Porsche, Ducati, Lamborghini, Bentley etc. That's 7 brands to split up the cost! Imagine having one mega 'VW expo' within the Auto Expo. Now, that would be some style.

More to skip 2018 Auto Expo .

Brands like Royal Enfield, Nissan, Bajaj Auto and Ford are also likely to skip the biennial event, though the companies are still weighing their options.

et

For the Volkswagen group, cost cutting might be an alibi, to justify non-participation in the 2018 Auto Expo. The real reason might as well be different!
Whatever the reason be, they are only hurting themselves more, by not being there!

How about Volkswagen actually having participated with special promos and hoardings highlighting that their resolve to make good cars is now better than ever before!

Thanks,
C_

Bajaj skipped the previous edition too, so that was on expected lines. Nissan is clearly not serious about the Indian market. If they are, they should participate and show the Kicks SUV as a preview.
