Toyota Camry Hybrid

Toyota's Hybrid area would be incomplete without the Camry. The Camry has been one of the bestselling sedans for Toyota in the Western markets. Although it hasn't had much success in the Indian market, the sedan still finds its place in the Indian line-up:


The Camry Hybrid was launched last year in February (related thread):


The auto LED headlamps get a smoked finish:


The 15 spoke alloy wheels are shod with 215/55 R17 tyres:


A lateral view of the dashboard:


The 3-spoke steering wheel has a classy wood finish on the top:


Note that the stitching on the top part of the dashboard is of the same colour as the seats. Few blanks on the Indian variant look out of place:


The wood finish on the window and ORVM control console looks nice. All auto up/down power windows and memory function for the driver seat:


The front seats are perforated and ventilated as well. Kogane coloured leather seats are similar to the topaz brown seats on the cousin Lexus ES300h:


The leg space is generous in the Camry:


The rear seats aren't ventilated like the front:


A wide center armrest with controls for the recline, temperature, rear shade and infotainment system towards the end. Very convenient indeed:

Land Cruiser Prado

Land Cruiser unveiled the Prado facelift which will be coming to India in March this year. There wouldn't be a grand launch as such and will directly go on sale:


The car was placed on an uneven platform to display the articulation of the vehicle:


The facelift gets a new grille:


The camera below the Toyota logo is to provide a 360-degree view of the surroundings while off-roading. A similar camera is placed at the back as well:


The new headlamps have an all LED setup with projectors for low beam:


The headlamps are off-road friendly. This means is that while off-roading, if you whack any of the front corners, the bumper will take the hit rather than the headlamp. The fog lamp at the bottom also gets LED treatment:


The 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels are shod with 265/60 R18 Bridgestone Dueler H/T tyres:


The rear wheels get air suspension which allows the car to have...


...a huge suspension travel range:


The rear gets a side-opening tailgate:


The tailgate has a split folding rear windshield:


The interiors have been tweaked as well for the facelift. Although there are still a lot of hard plastics overall which don't feel premium:


The cabin is width is quite evident:


Nice leather wrapped multifunction steering wheel. The cruise controls are placed on the right behind the steering wheel:


The MID is new and now gets a colour display as well:


All windows get auto up/down function. Note the sturdy grab handle on the door pad:

The sunroof doesn't extend all the way back for the rear passengers:


The infotainment system is new. The HVAC controls look old and in total contrast with the touchscreen infotainment screen above:


The controls for off-roading are placed below the infotainment screen:


The Comfort or Sport suspension setting can be selected by a switch below the gear lever. The old-school knobs for the ventilated seat control are placed behind the gear lever. A cubbyhole along with 12V power output and USB & Aux input are placed at the bottom of the center fascia:


The center armrest has a huge cooled storage space which is good enough to hold four 750 ml bottles:


Legroom for the middle row passengers is more than enough:


The rear passengers get 2 grab handles. A fixed one on the B-pillar and a foldable one on the roof which also gets a coat hook. Note the A/C vent next to the grab handle:


Just like the front, the rear A/C controls are also old school. The rear seats are ventilated like the front ones:


The third row of seats get foldable headrests. These need to be folded inside when tumbling them down:


The third row of seats can be tumbled down and brought up again electrically using these buttons:


The earlier car was powered by a 3.0L D-4D diesel engine. The same engine will power the facelift:

The 2018 Land Cruiser doesn't get any changes on the outside:

Toyota Driving School

Currently operational in 9 locations around the country, the school provides 2 programs for learning -
a. Start program - Suitable for beginners who do not have a license. Depending on the location, the fees are around Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 6,000.
b. Smart program - Suitable for drivers who want to brush up their skills. The fees are in the range of Rs. 3,000 to 5,000.

Maruti also has driver training program, but that's completely based on a simulator (without an actual car). The screen ahead shows the road conditions:

Toyota also had this cool Land Cruiser experience. The simulator had been set to North American off-road conditions and you could drive in 3 different road conditions - Rough, Snowy and Mountain:

Toyota had displayed the Prius at the 2016 Auto Expo. This time around, they decided to showcase the chassis to highlight the technology underneath:

Toyota later in the day took the wraps off the Alphard MPV. The Alphard is a full-size luxury MPV which is currently in its third generation. The car measures 4,915 mm and has a wheelbase of 3,000 mm:


A huge front grille with excessive chrome is quite aggressive:


The rear is almost squarish. A chunky chrome plate bearing the Toyota logo sits in between the tail lamps:


The tailgate opens upwards like a hatchback. The boot space is not that great, although that isn't the reason anyone would buy this MPV:


The headlamps with integrated DRLs are a size too small for the front grille. The turn indicators are placed below:


The 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels are shod with 235/50 profile tyres:


The ORVMs are integrated with turn indicators:


The interiors are all-black with a lot of leather and piano black finishes all over.


The Alphard has side steps to help you get into the front seats:


A well sized chunky multi-function steering wheel. Goes well with the overall bulky feel of the vehicle:


Leather finish has been added to the doorpad as well. The memory function for the driver seat has been placed at the top part of the doopad:


The center console is pretty wide and houses a basic infotainment system. The car is targeted for cab operators. The HVAC controls are placed below the infotainment unit:


The front door opening seems slightly narrow. You can even extend the leg rest on the front passenger seat just like in the lounge chairs:


A look at the controls on the roof console. You can even slide open and close the rear doors using these buttons:


The middle row of seats is nothing less than a couple of Barcaloungers:


It was difficult to get Vid6639 out of that seat:


The front passenger seat can be adjusted from the rear seat as well:


The rear passengers get a separate zone of climate control. The 'Color' button on the left is to change the ambient lighting on the roof:


Finally, we got Vid6639 to squeeze into the 3rd row of seats:


Vid6639 (6') had a healthy legroom even in the last row:


The last row of seats can be adjusted by moving front and back to increase the luggage space. The seats have individual armrests:


The last row of seats also gets air vents, grab handles and reading lights:


The third row of passengers won't feel claustrophobic with that much of glass area:


The last row of seats can be folded sideways as well to increase the boot space:


The Alphard is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine which in the international markets makes 271 BHP @ 6,200 rpm and 340 Nm @ 4,700 rpm:

The one in the picture above is the old 3L KDFTV engine. Rest of the world gets 2.8 GDFTV engine in the Prado but with Euro6 complaint emissions control system with DPF and SCR. The new 2.8GDFTV made it's appearance first in the Prado actually.

Correct and at @ over 90 lac this must be the only vehicle anywhere in the world without an engine cover No wonder it sells 1/10 or less than its bigger cousin. They do sell this with 3,0 ltr in some other countries including South Africa

Hope they have equipped this with 6-speed gearbox (though I have doubt given the specs from elsewhere with this engine). Let's wait till they update Indian site which is down for this particular model.

They can easily do over 100 a month if they start assembling here and price at 60-65 Lac.

With an engine having power lower than Innova, 5-speed gearbox & at 90 Lac Ex-Showroom, this is dead before arrival. I reckon they could have found some buyers had they equipped this with 6 Cylinder Petrol.

Toyota needs to launch the replacement Prado and LC ASAP as the current ones are a decade old. Once that is done, they should consider assembling these vehicles in India.

BTW i was surprised to learn that they just launched the facelifted Prado in the UK with (believe-it-or-not) the Innova's 2.8 Diesel!

To get one in India at 65L ex showroom- at the same price of a GLE 250d without discounts- would be very very tempting indeed. But luxury variants of the Prado are rather expensive everywhere. Only the project site spec vehicles are cheaper in markets like the Gulf.

To have a big Toyota Diesel before you is a comfort factor when doing week long drives around various locations.

( If the ex showroom price doesn't breach 1 cr mark, I might buy one to replace my GLE. (It was already 90 before the face-lift) Above that with the full fat LC 200 is going at 140L it won't be an easy choice. The GLE was bought after selling the LC200, and I really miss the Toyota. )

The 1GD-FTV ( 450 Nm @ 1600-2400 rpms ) was originally designed for

• Lancruiser Prado
• Hilux
• Fortuner
• Innova Crysta ( in a lower state of tune - 360 Nm @ 1200 - 3400 rpms )

The 2.8 L 1GD-FTV is more capable than the old 3.0 L engine. And that's why the new fortuner gets that engine as well.

Since, it's designed to handle a much tougher terrain, the engine should probably outlast its owner on the Innovas which does its duty mostly on highway/city roads.

PS: Knowing Toyota, even that 450 Nm torque on Prado/Hilux/Fortuner should be a very detuned config for a modern 2.8L diesel to increase durability and drivability.

I’m a fan of Toyota for their well known, sturdy reliability their products have on offer which is a USP for them.

However, I’m disappointed with the cluttered fascia of the new sedan Yaris alongside the DRL placement. I believe the Ciaz will still take the lead for few months before the reliability and quality proves it’s better than anything on offer. Until then Ciaz will still lead the segment because the niche it’s earned for itself with MSIL tag. Toyota will catch up soon though.

On another note, I’m sure MSIL will prep the Ciaz with some bells and whistles in the next avatar to make the competition go a little tougher than we think it can be!

Etios - I’m sure Toyota is happy the way it’s selling on the taxi segment. I don’t think they’re going to reconsider the option of revising the looks or mechanical upgrades.

Toyota never sold earlier generations of their cars in our market - even when they were best sellers themselves. Cars beyond their intended life cycles were promptly replaced.

Qualis, previous generation Innova etc are examples of this. I doubt if they would ruin that goodwill just for the small numbers acheived by the Etios, that too from the commercial segment.

Etios was launched in 2010 and is a pretty dated product now. It was launched against the first generation DZire which is well into the third generation. Ideally it is an odd one out in the modern Toyota showroom once the Yaris twins arrive.

Although Lexus claims the ES300 is built on a different platform and isn’t just a spruced up Camry, the resemblance is growing stronger with the new tan interior that is indeed very similar to the Lexus topaz brown as mentioned here earlier.
I’m surprised Toyota didn’t share it’s stall with Lexus, the latter needs all the PR and marketing at this point to get sales rolling better.
