Tata Tigor EV @ Auto Expo 2018

Big shoutout to Vid6639 for shooting these pictures & his coverage of the Auto Expo. Thanks for sharing, man!

Tata Motors has displayed electric versions of the Tigor and Tiago at the 2018 Auto Expo. With the government planning to stop sale of vehicles that run on fossil fuels by 2030, these two are likely to play an important role for Tata Motors in the coming years.

The Tigor EV on display is mechanically identical to the cars Tata Motors is supplying to the Government of India. The car is based on the XZ and XZ(O) variants:

Glossy black front grille does not have any holes for ventilation as it is an EV. Blue accents on the grille and foglamp surrounds denote the presence of an electric motor:

Blue EV badges on the front grille...

...and front side body panels:

EV decals on the rear side body panels:

Blue theme continues at the rear with a shiny blue strip running between the tail-lamp clusters and a blue EV badge:

Sticker on the boot tells us that the electric drive system is supplied by Electra EV:

A couple of spokes of the alloy wheels are painted in blue as well:

Interiors gets blue accents on the air-con vents:

State of charge is displayed in the tachometer:

Gear shifter has a perforated texture:

EV branding and blue accents on the seats:

Even the floor mats feature Tigor EV branding:

3 phase AC induction motor has a huge cover on top. It produces 30 kW (40 BHP) and is mated to a single speed gearbox. Max speed and range are rated at 100 km/h and 130 km respectively. The car has a 216 Ah, 72V battery, which can be charged in 360 minutes (90 minutes with fast charging):

Viewed from the front of the car, the fuse box is located on the left of the motor...

No underbody protection provided. But, you find some blue paint here as well:

Boot holds a battery pack. This underbody shot shows where the battery is located. Not sure where spare tyre goes:

Re: Tata Tigor EV @ Auto Expo 2018

I like this. A smart looking car, well loaded with features and I assume does not compromise on the safety with respect to Airbags and ABS. Range is still intra-city level, but not bad. Good to see the fast charging option too. A little overboard on the 'blue'.

Probably not going to break any performance records though.

Pricing is the key for these cars to become mainstream. With this, I still don't see any breakthroughs which can bring down prices.

Still, EV option in a mainstream good selling car. Definitely a good start.

I guess pricing such cars not over INR 10 lacs (on-road), and slew of government benefits such as zero road-tax and exemption from parking fees can really turn the tables in favour of EVs almost immediately.

The Tata EVs look the most matured amongst its relevant competitors, but their first mover advantage may end really soon if they don't roll out on a mass-scale in hope of better economies of scale.

I doubt it. Because the main limiting factor is still the range, for most EVs south of a certain brand called Tesla.

Till technology can offer such a range (not Tesla level performance, just range) in budget cars as well - these can only be used as a second or third car in the garage - and not as a primary allrounder.

TATA is already off to a great start with the Tigor EV. The breakthrough for TATA was that they were able to achieve prices lesser than Mahindra and Nissan even though both of them had more experience with EVs.

Private vehicle sales will be limited though as I mentioned above.

Spotted these for the second time. Almost 5-6 cars driving together. All of them had the Govt of India Label. Looked like they were being delivered to some govt organization. Those were all EVs

Wow. They seem to have done something that Mahindra with a decade of lead couldn't do. I bet no one has seen 3 EVs of any brand together at once on Indian roads.

Saw Tigor EV in Lucknow dealership. The registration in UP will start from April for private owners hence the car was here for RTO verification. In UP, Lucknow, Agra, NCR will get the RTO nod for EV. Tigor EV will launch for private buyers in April as per dealership.

re: Tata: New electric car to be released in 2 months

It appears that Tata Motors is pitching for the Tiago/Tigor EVs to the state government.

I could not get, what the reporter meant by 'market'. Maybe the Tiago/Tigor EVs are being made ready for a commercial launch.

No other new electric vehicle from them has been in the news, which is ready for launch.

Such a half baked article, I would say.

Electric Tigor was in Concorde Motors last week. Everybody was so excited that it is noiseless, and accelerates smoothly! It's going to be launched soon I was told!

re: Tata: New electric car to be released in 2 months

I have seen that any car initially developed for IC engines and later converted to electric drive-train will have it's own disadvantages; weight, battery size etc being some of them. They could be talking about Tiago/Tigor EVs in this case. But I am not really excited about the news as we already know that they have limited range. It will be a pain to use them because of "range anxiety". But it will be a different game when our manufacturers come up with electric cars designed from a clean slate, cars that were meant to be EVs from their inception !

re: Tata: New electric car to be released in 2 months

If they release Tigor/Tiago EV then these might be first ever production models to have petrol diesel as well as electric options(in India)! On top of this JTP version will have turbo petrol, which leaves only Hybrid powertrain untouched territory

I hope they launch these vehicles with a higher capacity battery pack compared to the ones supplied to EESL.

Unlike EESL contract, they don't have any bids to win here !

If they do, then we'd have viable alternatives to MahindranReva e2O range of vehicles.

Batteries being the most expensive component in an electric car, any additional battery capacity will take the cost much higher than the cost in EESL contract. At >11L, the Tigor supplied to EESL is already an expensive vehicle. I am hoping for a Tiago at < 10L in which case I will be booking the car immediately. Anything more than 10L will be a difficult decision for me.
