Design Schools @ Auto Expo 2018

Tucked away in a corner of a hall were stalls of institutes that offered graduate & post graduate courses related to automotive industry. Most of the institutes were offering "design" related courses, some had transportation as the major offering and within that had design as the sub-specialization.

Key take-away after discussion with the institutes were:
  • Most of these required no fancy education eligibility criteria apart from completion of +2.
  • "Design" was the marquee offering that these institutes were positioning
  • Students could get jobs/career in any industry after these -- not just automotive (For example, retail, consumer facing, hospitality, furniture -- all these also include design & user research elements)
  • Real design jobs are VERY scarce in automotive industry and hard to come by. Institute like Strate Design mentioned that they limit the intake to < 15 per year in design track.

All in all, I think students now have good opportunity to get involved with various different aspects of automotive industry as a career option apart from the regular "Engineer" career.

Re: Design Schools @ Auto Expo 2018

MIT Institute of Design based out of Pune. They have various design specializations and automotive falls under transportation design track.

Posters showcasing the plethora of focus area -- Research, Conceptualization, Modelling/Sculpting etc. Must say that the clay models displayed there were very nice.

The professor there told me about a 1:1 working scale model of Shelby Cobra that students built. Quite interesting to see that.

Re: Design Schools @ Auto Expo 2018

NID had one of the bigger stalls with more visitors -- understandably so, as they are the IIT-IIM equivalent in the user experience / design space

Strate school of design was also there and they highlighted their French lineage and the fact that their alumni network is very strong. The representative mentioned that there is a Strate alumni in almost every automaker at the highest levels in design related areas.

Brochure of Strate school of design. Right now they are based out of Bangalore. Interestingly, googling their Indian website says that the website may be hacked . So go there at your own risk

An institute called the "World University of Design". Couldn't find anyone here to get more details of this college. Their website http://worlduniversityofdesign.ac.in/ says they are based out of Delhi.

Re: Design Schools @ Auto Expo 2018

I wonder how big are the design shops of our home grown manufacturers like Tata Motors and Mahindra ? for e.g what the org structure is like and how many are employed within the company and at the vendor locations.

Does outsourcing happen in the design world ?

With M&M's acquisition of Pininfarina - will that result in any India jobs ?

How much of design work does Maruti-Suzuki do out of India given that we are their largest market ?
