Mahindra Great Escape Shahapur 2011

So someone finally sat up and took the right decision. The track for 2wd and 4wd was separated. I nice track was selected. The ride to the track from the briefing place resort was like 1km away. The forest was lush. But it was not raining at all

The best great escape that I have attended since starting going to these events 3 years ago. The track was tough but only lightly so. There was no rain, but boy was it raining Thars. There were as many Thar's as other vehicles among the 40 or so 4wd participants

I did not take too many snaps as I was driving my 540DP, but there were many many snappers and videographers in attendance. And Ferdi in his Classic provided by far the most spectacular photo ops

As I said it was raining only Thars. There were Thars in front and Thars behind. They were everywhere

And oh yes. The skinny tyres on my Jeep, costing all of 2500 each did very very well in all conditions. Never once losing traction or grip. Just goes to prove that you dont really need fatties and stuff costing 10k each to do light to medium offroading!!

Fully agree, very well said.

Good to hear this. 53BHP do share the nature and kind of obstacles in 2WD and 4WD tracks.

Did you notice which Car Vinod was driving, I believe it had something special in it.

Dont tell me it was the Original Concept Thar which participated earlier.
Had to miss this one coz am just out of Viral but let the pics continue.
Rohit, good to see your 540 do one OTR.

Yes tyres on a terrain like this do not matter that much. After last years fiasco (with 2WDs), Mahindra have mellowed this years MGE a lot, no fun i believe. I know some people who did the entire 4WD trail in 2WD, yes its true.

I have NDMS on my Cj and ive done all the obstacles of last years Examm and AKc and many other OTRs prior to that. Its only when you get accustomed to what your vehicle and tyres can do that you will attempt or refrain from attempting an obstacle. NDMS have its limitations and in certain obstacles which calls for additional assistance from its tyres inspite of the tremendous torque the Hurricane churns out, one hopes that one had better shoes but yes for almost all types of terrain, the NDMS are good. What tyres are you running Rohit. Are they all terrain?

Good to see your Classic taste some muck Steiger.

Re: Mahindra Great Escape Shahapur 2011

Agent Vinod (Nooks) was driving the black Thar. Guess he has inherited it after Mr BD moving on. Don't know what set up they had on it though.

Cant say the trail was tough though it was nice. Good fun trail. Mr. Bhosale was saying that the 2wd trail was a lot flatter and yet pretty challenging for the 2wd participants, especially the noobs!!. We did quite a bit of slush, a bit of rockies and a couple of river crossings. Most of the trail was slush though. I guess if it had rained (not Thar's) the route would have been more challenging.

The tyres I am running are stock nylons manufactured by a tyre dealer (Gobind Tyres) at Khar Mumbai. They are 8 ply 6x 16. He has named the tyres Baraaj (probably after his son or something). I went to get NDMS tyres from him but he said it would tale 2 weeks for a set. Then he said why dont you try these. 2500/- a piece. So I thought what the heck? Remoulded nylons cost 2200/- a pop. How bad can these be. So sure you shouldnt be doing AKC or EXAMM in these, but MGE no problem

Dont have Gobind tyres number. But I am sure you can get it off the net

I knew it, I knew it!! This is one heck of a special "Concept" Thar. Running a different fueling and ECM setup with a different engine. Is a tough cookie to catch up to even on the highway and handles like a dream.

Oh Kulwinder. Hes a great guy. I bought my Bighorns from him (though still lying with him-reserved for me till my Rims appear.)
And yes Baraaj is his son, i remember him telling me. At this price, you cant go wrong, whatever they are!!

More pics please.

Re: Mahindra Great Escape Shahapur 2011

well loads of pictures from my side, shall put them up in a bit, or ask garett to do so,
the track was so so, not too difficult, i think the lack of rains since the last two days made it all the more easy.
was fun meeting all the guys out there.
good part this year was that since both tracks were separate we never had a lot of waiting to do on the track
one more point
there was a mahindra service jeep in the 4wd track, well she was a 4wd jeep, only problem she never had a front propeller shaft and kept getting stuck everywhere, and the mahindra guys present never knew why she was not engaging 4wd untill i got it to their notice, maybe they can check their vehicles next time

but a much better organised event this time

btw: there was the mahindra thar with the hideous external roll cage, the rear was well designed but the roll cage just made it loose all its charm

regards
Allan

My first ever MGE and my first attempt at 4x4! A very memorable experience. never thought off-roading would be so much fun! And completed successfully without stalling my vehicle nowhere

Who had the black Thar with "Live to Drive" Sticker?

You're kidding me!! I remember the last time also two of their vehi9cles got stuck and the other one went to retrieve it, so all the participants got stuck without anyone to retrieve them.

i very nearly self extracted that 2wd invader myself and the recovery vehicle came and blocked my path and made me loose momentum.

Pissed me off. Then he attaches the tow rope to pull me. Since i was pissed, i stepped on the brake and let the recovery vehicle with road tyres spin for a while while i laughed my guts off. After min, i let him recover me.
