After the LC and Mansoor's vehicle attempted the trail, cleared off most of the boulders and leveled the rut, it sort off had become a highway. Therefore, it becomes lot more challenging if you start first.
Robi - You were stuck at the 2nd descent into the water. All members of your team attempted to skirt the water and more or less got the same result.

Ali's team drove right through the water and came out in the middle without a hassle. Different line...different result.

Climb 4 wasn't easy but was easier for the first few teams. As the softer sand gave way the end of the climb became a sheer wall. Your team had NOBODY spotting climb 4. The teams that had spotters at climb-4 made it on the first...or second attempt.

the technique through the waters of Palar is to crawl out in as high a gear as possible without bogging down or spinning up the wheels. You spun your wheels so much the vehicle just sank in. Others made the same mistake at the pool on the entry to climb 4.

Ask Prabhu AV's team if their climb was easier (they arrived towards the end). They had a huge boulder in the middle of the climb and a sheer wall face at the end.

Ali gave up early...probably because he was psyched out seeing your team's vehicles all stuck at different parts of the trail.

The LC never got near Climb-4

Guru,
That SS had changed completely when I saw the last few team doing it. Ali and me got stuck at the same spot as we were the first one to enter, and no way we could have done any thing. Hez way to experienced driver to get psyched out by others.

See the discussion is about how different the SS becomes after few team have take the attempt, and mainly for SS5 day 1 and SS2 day2 which were the most challenging once.

Keeping all these discussions a side, I must say the SS selection was too good. Enjoyed every bit of it.

Re: TPC2011 - Event Report

I made a reference to F1 earlier and it is an analogy that holds good. Even on a Go-Karting track, the guys who set their lap times later in the day have an easier time thanks to the rubber laid down by the other cars that ran earlier. The track layout hasn't changed...just the track conditions and the results can be remarkably different.

Yes it is a phenomenon we've all observed and I am sure the TPC organizers have seen this happening over the years but there isn't a lot we can do. The staggered start gives all teams a chance to start an SS...and attack other SS's later in the day when the terrain may be a bit more favorable. This may not always be the case as Vikram's SS-3 on day-2 actually became more difficult.

Robi - take a look at the score-cards. Several teams didn't make it through Climb-4 of SS2 on Day2 regardless of their starting time. Vijay Reddy's team didn't make it. Anyway - we acknowledge that the terrain changes over time...no disputing that. It adds to the element of luck and chance but doesn't necessarily take away from the skill needed to clear the obstacles.

SS selection is a joy for the organizers and one of the reasons why I love being a Marshal for TPC...this was my second year running. Visualizing what the vehicles will do through the obstacle and deciding the sequence is very exciting if you like setting challenges. The 8 recces done by the organizers leading up to the event gave us plenty of options. The aim is to up the difficulty level without setting up an SS which requires technique beyond the capability of the weekend off-roading enthusiast.

I don't think any of us are professional off-roaders and keeping in mind that "FUN" is the only glue holding this whole enterprise together, I dearly hope you guys had a BLAST and plan to come back next year with an even greater degree of preparation.

I must also make a special mention of Mahendran who, literally, single-handedly navigated the SSs on Day-1 and Day-2. I am humbled, inspired and proud at the same time. It was a ballsy and commanding display of driving ability...astonishing!

Mahendran, was THE star of the event. Hats off to him. Seeing him drive for two days was sheer brilliance..!!! To all of us at Bangalore offroaders, he was the REAL star of the event. The BEST driver.!!!

As appreciation of his driving skills, Bangalore offraoders, with approval from the organizers, announced the popular choice award for the 'best driver' to him -- consisting of a set of 2 T-Shirts & a Hi-Lift Jack.

Mahendran, your hi-lift will be with you shortly.

He is the best driver, no doubt about it. Very sharp and absolutely right judgment of angle during every approach.

Seeing him drive and complete SS-5 day 1 was something to watch and learn.

Mahendran, would love to see you drive with us next time man.

Interesting pictures. I think team 2.1 would have fared better on this SS if the co-drivers/navigators were out of the vehicles while doing the obstacles and were spotting for the drivers. Maybe the excitement of the first SS of the day did not let them think on this part.

I, personally, would have loved to be the first one on this SS and do these long climbs. Would have given a good workout for my Gypsy.

Khan,
You right we wouldnt have struggled so much to complete this SS. But after one vehicle got stuck on this SS from then on the Co drivers were on their feet and did a fantastic job throughout the event.

Vikram,
We are ready for the bid and you should know, BODA never lost on a bid.

One thing I must say about him, the way he controlled and guided his team during SS. A combination of authority and guidance.
Just superb man!!

Re: TPC2011 - Event Report

Thanks to all the off roader for the affection & appreciation and BODA for the award,

I had a very equipped gypsy (2 year of exp in o-Team) and a very calm and cool team Ragu (mm550) and Vimal (CL500), who were excellent with their machine and made me feel that I shouldn’t have sold my MM550 .

Day 1 I missed to tell what a co-Driver/Spotter should do in the team, but in a way it helped to build a very good coordination among the drivers, watching out for the each other’s move and reduced confusion.

But in day 2 our co-Driver Shiva and Fazul did a fantastic job.

We enjoyed all the SS, but the only SS that psyched us was Day 2, SS 3, second obstacle which was like vehicle breaker towards the end of the day, since I wanted to take my gypsy back home safe I didn’t even try it, that SS need a spotter who has good experience in driving.

Even though I have been in o-team for 2 years I felt that this year had great SS.

Thanks to Arka and Vikram to find boulders in pallar and SS3, we have never even thought that pallar had a place like this, great effort has been taken by the organizer to find good SS, proper map to point spots which helped us in the run. Hats off to the organizing team

Bangaore Offroad Development Authority!

Well there is a story behind this also, we have been searching for a name much before last TPC, but having so many leaders always had a problem that we never finalized anything. So this time around in one of the usual yapping session this name suggestion came about and we just went with it blindly.

Now more brownie points for identifying where the logo came from
