Reversing time ticker.

The day started with judging the best prepared vehicle. This was followed by a demo drive on the specially prepared "fast" track with jumps, turns and ditches for the Polaris ATV's. Four vehicles were on show ridden by experienced riders.

The Indian Rally star Gaurav Gill beat all other timings by sizable margin while just trying his hands on a new machine. Here he is taking a very very sharp left hand V turn:


It was a treat to watch how he recovered. Never did he even let go of the accelerator while correcting the roll above with a right flick of steering. Who wouldn't want to be in passenger seat with him for a treat like this?

So the challenges were laid out and in the 4 Guna 4 competition started with cars and people scurrying all over to complete their score sheets. Many were reluctant to enter first and preferred watching from sidelines to work out best approaches. But slowly and slowly all got in to the game.

Before prize giving we still had the most exciting and fun part to be done. Now it was time for......???

...... the best part of competition. Team Trials.

There were five teams. Team competition was in form of buddy tag teams. Two vehicles with crew were to complete few of the challenges together. The timing started with entry of first car and exit of second car.

The purpose was to see if working as tag team they are able to clear all obstacles without calling for help from JCB uncle. How the first will negotiate and where the second will wait to render help.....etc etc were all part of team strategy.

Team task needed one vehicle to pull the other out. The tyre wall, the slush pit and vertical walls all were challenges selected to test the team work. The previous video showed how the Mumbai team completed the vertical wall challenge.

Now compared to their timing NIOC Delhi team did things faster but foolishly. Watch this video posted by Vikram Kapoor on FaceBook to see how a winch is abused and ends up hurting a competitor.

Winches are not designed for tug pulls and after the competitor get hurt the wire rope breaks on a tug. Marshal's keep warning the crowd of stepping back.

Another video grab by Vikram shows how team vs individual mentality works.

As one vehicle attempts the task the other gets ready for for possible tow to save time. They had the tow strap also attached to save time but.....

At the end with one pull the team could get the vehicle out. However they wasted time in trying to get the vehicle out all on its own. Also observe Arjun of other team standing next to marshal smiling at this waste of time ;-)

When second vehicle attempts the challenge the tow is attached much faster.

4 guna 4 is full of surprises. The entry of slush pit had a ninety left and many people did not judge the turning point correctly or tried doing it in one go instead of couple of to and fro turns. The end result was generally:

The same is visible in the video at 1.11 minutes. Very quick reflex and executed perfectly. A must watch for every offroader.. Got to learn and keep it in mind always. Thanks.
