Report: 2013 Mahindra Great Escape @ Sakleshpur

After getting my 4wd Scorpio last year, i had never got a chance to take it offroad. Mahindra Great Escape in Sakleshpur was the best chance to slot 4 low.

Saklsehpur MGE was for two days, first being trail drive and second day for offroad trophy. These are the photos from the first day.

So, here goes my first OTR...

This year's trail was not very interesting as the last year. We were at the rear end and mostly were just waiting. There were a few spots to use 4L. But that said, Kadumane estate scenery was amazing! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Besides trying out my Thar's 4L for the first time here, I also rented a GoPro Hero 2. Video is in post production. Hoping to post it here.

Very interesting. Out here in Delhi, we don't get to see so much greenery all over. I am also interested in getting a Scorpio LX 4x4 next year. Can you tell what all accessories you have fitted and the costs involved. Your tyres + alloys are also upsized, which ones are those? How has your experience been with the mighty Scorp? BTW, you drive a Scorp but you're called GypsyFreak! Howcome, man?

lots of questions...eh

There are quite a few places around here which have greenery, especially after the rains.

Started with a plan to get a 4wd and was on the look out for a gypsy. Hence the name gypsyfreak. After careful consideration, decided gypsy was too bare without creature comforts (AC, PS, PW). My expectations graduated to dual purpose (MNC office commute + moderate offroad). That's where the Scorpio LX 4wd came in to the house.

My Scorpio photos and mods are here http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/shifti...ml#post2999408

I am pretty satisfied with the Scorpio, only thing missing is ABS.
Tyres are stock MRF Wanderer AT. Alloys are 8j hence they look bigger. Alloys cost me 24K for set of 5.

Hey Thanks for pulling up this thread. There were another 2 Scorpios in our group, the pic you put up is our vehicle leading is our MM540 and another CJ3B.

Personally I feel it was just a trial drive, not much fun as we had one long queue and ended up waiting a lot only for the drive. Comparatively MGE 2012 was a blast It was superb, this was nothing compared to the earlier event.

Only one obstacle that was worthy enough was the last slush pit, thanks to one particular White THAR Di owner, it became an challenging one.

In fact we got featured in Autocar on the slush fest pic, attaching some pics taken by my brother.

Cool pictures. What are the mods done to the Scorpios?

This was my first MGE and wasn't prepared for the leeches, so did not step out much (even then got bitten), hence not many photos.

BTW, how are you guys managing the scratches received during MGEs. Any particular paint protection/sealant before and after MGE?

Re: Report: 2013 Mahindra Great Escape @ Sakleshpur

Great Pictures !, looks like you guys had loads of fun and adventure.
It is nice to see a retinue of Mahindras in their natural environment. I hope the people in the white jeep which toppled were ok in the end.
Hopefully I can be a part of this adventure in the near future.
The tyres and the clearance seems modified. As another BHPian asked, what were the modifications done on the Scorpio?

Not much mods on the Scorpios, but few noticeable ones are:
  • Heightened Torsen bar
  • Re-Cambered Wheels
  • Offroad Bumpers
  • 8 J alloys
Regarding the scratches, nothing particular as such. A good wash and waxing after the event did the trick. BTW the Black beauty is running with a Matt black wrap.

Re: Report: 2013 Mahindra Great Escape @ Sakleshpur

A Thar broke down in that little stream crossing and that to a DI Thar ?
A Bolero in 2WD can make through that without much ado even a Maruti 800 for that matter.

It must have been something else that happened to the vehicle at this juncture.

Even the guys in the Jeeps bogged down in slush is because of too much of tyre spin because of their own mistakes.

If a vehicle is in 4 high 2nd gear, drives with momentum cuts a straight path of least resistance nothing will happen in this slush just steady and a bit of steering control with constant power.

I am surprised you are able to deduce so much from the photo that only shows a part of the ditch.

I gave a close look at the ditch, saw two other Jeeps trying to make it and fail. Once I realised that the Jeeps get buried till the axle, I decided to skip the obstacle. I had 5% chance of making it, wasn't worth the risk and mud for me. I had a 200kms drive after the event, didn't want to snap something or get water damage at the last stage.

I would love to see you do it in a Maruti 800 though.

Oh boy!!! for a moment I though bhp had a glitch and you were supposed to reply to some other thread. I had to re-read your quotes to understand what your are trying to say here. The lesser minds you know

hey yeah a M800 would have completed the whole trail drive with out much efforts, but with few bruises here without a tyre or so. I'm happy you dint say
a Nano could make it Infact we used the 4H in the Scorpio only on 2 instances, rest was all 2h only.

As mentioned in my earlier post, the only challenging task was the slush pit, you can see the pic where the vehicle is down with is bottom half. The pit was man made, Say DI THAR man MADE. It was a simple dip and up pit, the thar who got struck there made this a fun pit to troll around. No jeep got broken down in this pit, only that the folks got struck royally. Later the organizers stopped the vehicle which did not have MT or NDMS. They just let them pass off.

Hmm interesting. Even i was looking at similar mods. Checked with Chrome motors in Bangalore. I was given the gyan that it should not be done as it will break the IFS suspension and here you are offroading with the same setup.
Could you please let me know where you got it done?

Well i was in the first 5-6 vehicles. Only 2 jeeps went through the slush ahead of me and it was just a simple drive with water splashing.
When i arrived at the obstacle the marshals told me that i can skip this as i don't have mud profile tyres and my bumper would cause additional blockade.
But this being my first offroad and me being enthusiastic decided to take the plunge. Got instructions from the marshals to use 4L, maintain momentum and keep turning the steering. With this advice entered the slush in 4L and was navigating the best possible path when Scorpio got stuck. Looked at the marshal and he asked me turn the steering, which i did and Scorpio came out of the slush. So basically, the simple pit became monster pit.

I am not talking about the slush pit, it was mentioned that a vehicle ( Thar ) got stranded in that little stream crossing.
