Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited

...or... I say dear chap would a spot of gardening catch your fancy ?

And this rather quaint British tone came into being thanks to the Fortuner Boys rubbing shoulders today with a pucca Brit product - the Land Rover Discovery -4.

The weather was perfect for an OTR. Very squally. Plenty of water and slush.
And we called it the T-FOG Monsoon 2013 Sign Off OTR.

In the end just this snap made all the chills and thrills worth it !
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02665.jpg

And possibly this too:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02664.jpg

Anyway I shall now get the snaps to do their task with minimal words from my side.

Admiral and all of us started at:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02583.jpg

Waiting for the gang ahead of Airoli Bridge.
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02590.jpg

But then seeing the heavy density truck traffic we realised that we would get squashed on the Thane - Belapur Road. So decided to go from the Mankhurd Link Road. The line up on MLR:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02592.jpg

Vashi Bridge:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02593.jpg

The E/W drive was fabulous:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02596.jpg
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02597.jpg

The gathering at Kamats Khandala just before breakfast:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02598.jpg

Not only was there a T-FOG meet but there was a HOG meet too:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02600.jpg
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02601.jpg

The Land Rover Discovery - 4 arrives to join the Fortuners. Driven by TBHPian Mad Monkey:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02602.jpg

Karan graciously shows the loo to Mad Monkey:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02602001.jpg

The pre departure bhashan:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02603.jpg

And the climb begins. No surprises here. Except that the trail was far more scenic than it was in July. Thanks to all the rains it soaked in and the vegetation. The tail was rough with very sharp stones & I was perpetually scared of them ripping the Dunlops. Thankfully the trail Gods were merciful.

The trail was delightful indeed:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02613.jpg

As usual plenty of minor water spots:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02614.jpg
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02615.jpg

Following Admiral:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02616.jpg

Soon a chotta break for snaps:

Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02619.jpg
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02622.jpg

Soon back on the trail:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02625.jpg

After last visit to Rajmachi and a bit of a fiasco where some of us couldn't climb The Devil's Back - this time it was quite a determined lot. But quite a few surprised awaited us...read on...

re: Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited

Back on the trail everything seemed normal. Plenty of slush:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02626.jpg

Narrowing trail way:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02627.jpg

Plenty of rocky terrain:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02630.jpg

But so delightful and soothing to the eye:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02631.jpg
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02632.jpg

We ran past the landslide point with no issues - except guiding each other with pin point accuracy.
And were slowly inching towards The Devil's Back with great trepidation. But glory be ! Even that was despatched with minimal of fusses.

We had by then decided that we wouldn't want to enter the village at the base of the fort. As the number of vehicles was large and the vehicles were large (!) and would irritate the villagers. Instead clear the toughest climb - The Devil's Back and turn towards The Doughnut Point.

As we were inching towards our goal, this innocent looking point almost tripped us. If that was Devil's Back this was Devil's Hole !
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02633.jpg
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02635.jpg

After sweating a bit all of us made it through the hole. With Admiral discovering pleasures of gardening:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02634.jpg

Final man Ahmed coming to the Devil's Hole:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02636.jpg

And backing up and deciding to go around it like an astute General by- passing enemy strongholds:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02637.jpg

The Doughnut Point Trail finally sighted !
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02639.jpg

Monaro climbs:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02641.jpg

Venkat climbs:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02642.jpg

Admiral reaches the top too:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02643.jpg

All ready to charge down to the D Point:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02646.jpg
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02648.jpg

But I say...wait aren't we missing someone ol' chap ?
Ahhh...there he comes. All huffing and puffing by George !
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02650.jpg

And all of us headed down to The D Point. With Admiral leading the charge.
And the old boy went into a spot in deep slush and sank upto his axles. With quite a bit of rocking and shaking he shook himself out of the deep pit. And looked quite a muddy character after coming out:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02652.jpg

And then Monaro went into the deep side of the pool and:
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02654.jpg
Royally stuck. From the camera side it doesn't show the right side which was stuck in much deeper quagmire.

And all efforts to pull Monaro out. And finally he was out.

Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02658.jpg
Seven Fortuners, One Land Rover & Rajmachi Revisited-dsc02659.jpg

A relieved smile from Monaro says it all:

And soon it was time to head back to home and hearth.
At The Devil's Back we saw a struggle. Between man, motorcycles and mother nature's infinite variety. The guy on the left with the Desert Storm was trying to go down. But kept coming back up. And finally they went down allowing us to slide down too.

The return too was a delightful experience.

At the final stop. For the good byes:

A great drive back. And was at home by:

What a fabulous outing it was. With all the chills, thrills &...spills !
So Monsoon 2013 as per the TFOG gang is officially over.

Thank you guys - Ahmed (who came in from Aurangabad again), Yuvraj (Mad Monkey) the Discovery - 4 show was great, Karan, Kedar, Monaro, Venkat & Manish.

What ho next ? The Winter OTR Season of course !

(My request now to my fellow OTRians to put up their view of the proceedings of the day, snaps, more snaps and videos too !)

Tally ho then chaps !

Great pics and a visual treat to see all those beasts together. Whose car is the white Fortuner ( number: 8888)? And what did you do to the tail lights? They look really good and dare I say, a lot better then the OEM ones.

Good fun again you guys had. Super pics!

Next time reduce tyre pressure in muck.

Also what rating is that tow rope? Green one is probably a 1 or 2 ton rated? Get a 5 ton one atleast and 15 m long with rated bow shackles.

Just when the Fortuner bug was about to leave my mind comes this thread and makes me fall in love with the vehicle all over again. As always excellent snaps and narration!

Questions:
1. Guderian Sir did you change the tyres on your ride?
2. Did the Discovery have better tyres (HT/AT)?

Need more insight on how the devils back was conquered this time round.

What should be the tyre pressure in the muck ?

When we used to do the Fortuner Bootcamps, we went down safely to 20 without worrying about the tyre coming off the rim. It did give us a wider footprint for the muck.

Looks like you guys had fun! What better way to spend a Sunday morning?
Would you be kind enough to allow a passenger to join in for your winter otr plans?

I wonder if the villagers are happy considering their routes might get spoilt with all the big wheels creating more slush. I had this thought looking at the pic of bikes struggling to use that route.

Nice narration Guderian, as usual, and fantastic pictures.
Thanks to the other members of the TFOG.
The lush green country side was a visual treat, no doubt.

I'm trying hard to suppress the desire for the Fortuner and every time you come up with such threads, the desire flares up within.

IIRC this belongs to KedarWalke. See his thread http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-d...-team-bhp.html

Hi Doc, Thank you. That Fortuner belongs to Kedar and is a post 2012 facelifted Fortuner. I am not sure he has done anything to the tail lights. I think they are OE. Kedar can clarify.

Hi miharbe, Thank you.
1. The tyres on Admiral were pretty much the same.
2. You may not believe it but the Land Rover Discovery - 4 had H/Ts not A/T and as per its owner - almost bald. But it neatly went up the slopes.

Simply put three things helped us:
1. Though the slush was present it was not as bad as the earlier trip. About 20% reduction was noticed thanks to the rains having washed away some of the clay. Though in some places it was bad - like at the Devil's Hole.
2. Luck. It didn't rain heavily at the time of our ascent unlike the last time and turn the whole place into a blasted quagmire.
3. And technique. I realised my mistake of last time when I went up the slope in LL or low range and dug myself further in with all the torque. This time just used HL at a single point on the fly and thundered up. The momentum did everything else. Even though Admiral fell in a couple of deep ruts it clambered out on HL rather than digging itself deep. That is something I clearly felt.
And of couse all of us were pretty determined and that it was a do or die for us and our machines this time around.

1. Sure selfdrive.
2. Those bikers themselves are adventurers. Last time some portions of the trail were ruined by bikers.
As far as the villagers are concerned they collect a pretty penny as some tax paid to the Forest Dept on entry (which we had paid once earlier) which presumably goes into the village development kitty. Years ago when I had lunch with the then Sarpanch of the village (I was on official work then !) he explained how the system worked. Also the villagers by and large are happy getting in some outsiders for the economy in terms of some items and food etc sold from the village and at times rescue work, organising corporate dos ( Rajmachi is used as a venue for outbound training by many corporates. Have organised and attended a couple here myself. Besides many of the villagers live elsewhere if they are employed and come to their homes on leave for festivities etc. So the dependency on the trail for daily runs may be not the same like elsewhere. So they I believe are OK with the traffic and the trekkers. This was the position sometime ago. I guess it still continues.

Well I have the perfect antidote for this condition.
Just buy a Fortuner and...join us !

Thank you for the tips Tejas.
Somehow it was a little disconcerting to deflate the tyres there and also that it was firmly in our minds that tyre deflation worked best for sandy terrains. At an earlier point Monaro had pointed this out but we demurred !

Wow!

That is some good excursion. Nice pictures and rescue effort, as well.

The mist and the fog played a great role for the pictures to come out well.

Good show and thanks for the crisp write up.
