Kolkata on Wheels (KOW) is a renowned car group in Kolkata who is mostly into touring and they organize car related events too. They wanted to introduce off-roading events for there registered members. When it comes to Off-roading the best one can get is, a guidance from Uday Bhan Singh Sir. So 'Kolkata on Wheels' joined hand with Kolkata Offroaders (KO) to train there members on how to go off road. So an event where members from Kolkata on Wheels, Kolkata Off-roaders and off course Team Bhp were present in once place!

UBS Sir always want to make offroading popular among enthusiasts and here he & Kolkata Off-Roaders got a chance to train many car enthusiasts.

On this very special event Mr.C.Murugan (MD of WBTDC) was invited as a guest. He values suggestions from Team Bhpians a lot for the improvement of West Bengal Tourism. Ref thread- http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/street...l-tourism.html

Mitsubishi was the Title Sponsor for the event from the part of Kolkata on Wheels and their Dealer Shah Automobiles had sent the Demo Vehicles (the MT & the AT Versions of their 4x4 Pajero Sport) for the event. Apart from the this there were other Pajero Sport Owners also who had been invited by Kolkata on Wheels to the event to make their machines do what they are best at i.e.- Off Roading !!


Recently Kolkata Offroaders joined hands with UNOCAL 76 Lubricants as their Lubricant Partners and invited them also to be a part of this magnificent event. The UNOCAL Team was present at the event and they were innovative enough to understand the basic needs of such an event. They made Chilled Cold Drinks (kept in numerous Ice Boxes) available to all the attendees at the event to beat the heat on complimentary basis and arranged for a handful Outdoor Garden Umbrellas which were fixed at strategic location to provide shade from the scorching sun to the Spotters, Marshals and the Visitors which was commendable. A special vote of thanks to BHPian AJ-got-BHP to have been behind the scenes of all this and make this possible.


Before i start with the actual event let me share few 'behind the scene' pics right from UBS Sir's house on how they spend time to make these jeeps ready for the event where they perform flawlessly. Plus before this event Kolkata Off-roaders went to Panuda more than couple of times just to mark the obstacles, the newbie drivers should try and see the overall feasibility of the places and test there jeeps. Mr. C.Murugan fell in love with jeeps too and he himself tried his hand on the wheels with UBS Sir as an instructor. After this experience he even expressed his interest to introduce Off-roading in West Bengal as a part of adventure sports to enhance Bengal tourism.

The alarm rang at 5am and yes no laziness today, after all am going to attain an OTR! By 7am i picked up Bhpian SouraC and we were on our way to the OTR spot near Pandua. On the go we had a small breakfast stop at Azadhind Dhaba on Nh2. Reached the spot at 9am.

All the jeeps were lined up and the Kow guys were just coming in for the event.

A briefing on how the whole event went through.

1) 9-10 Am.
In the beginning Kolkata Offroader members gave a small briefing on jeeps, about how the 4WD works or where and when it should be engaged and how. Plus what to do and and what not to do.



2)10-11Am
After the briefing session, the experienced drivers from KO showed few Off-Roading maneuvers to the wanna be offroaders.




3)11Am-12pm
Followed by this that KO drivers took the KOW registered members on the jeeps and drove them through the off-road trails while the seat inside and watch.




4)12-1pm
After this the KO guys handover the jeeps to the KOW members and allow them to drive with one KO member seating beside them as a mentor.




5) 1pm
Lunch Break
The yummy food was from Azadhind Dhaba and the chilled cold drink cans and few small goodies were sponsored by Unocal 76 Lubricants.









6) 2-4pm.
Post lunch KOW members were given the jeeps to drive alone on the trails marked by KO guys. KO members did the marshaling and spotting while they were driving.






7) 4-4-30pm.
A small cultural programmed was arranged by KOW.





8) 4-30 - 5pm.
UBS sir himself gave certificate to the KOW members who have taken part in the event and drove the jeeps.



9) At the end of it all, the program could not have been concluded without felicitating Mr. Uday Bhan Singh Sir and the same was done by BHPian AJ-got-BHP from the part of UNOCAL 76 Lubricants

He arrived around 10am. UBS Sir, personally gave time to Mr.C.Murugan so he can best understand about off-roading.

The Pajero Sports were impressive. Only drawback was the longish wheelbase and rear overhang, but apart from that, they displayed

• Awesome power/torque
• Fantastic body composure
• Ease on sandy inclines
• Effortlessness on the inside as if they were walking in the park

But hey! We are talking about Mitsubishi here and a vehicle that they trusted with the Pajero nameplate (despite its "Triton" roots).

This is exactly what Kolkata Offroaders (KO) did by mentoring the Members of Kolkata on Wheels (KOW) on and about Offroading. A hands on experience provided by none other than the great man himself - Mr. Uday Bhan Singh (UBS Sir) and his Team of Enthusiastic Passionate Offroaders. Not to put aside the effort and the inherited skills put in by UBS's Son - Mr. Adhiraaj Singh to make the event a successful one.

A day out for Offroading cannot go by without having some action from the Mahindra Thar. One of the participants had recently purchased this Red Beast and was out there with us to do what the THAR is best at - Offroad !! Sharing some pictures of the THAR :

Well that's enough and all from my side. I was privileged to be present at the event which was one of it's kind with a phenomenal turnout. This may be the stepping stone to consider Offroading as a Sport in this Eastern Part of the Country and make it more popular in the years to come !!

Just to clarify, Marengo felt honored in being chosen for the initial demo of what 4x4's can do and in which responsibility, it did not do anything silly or misguiding.

However, coincidentally most of the pictures of Marengo (My 2010 Mahindra Scorpio 4wd) in some sort of action in this thread were not part of the main event.

(Pictures of Marengo during its official performance incidentally are not there, because the bhpians were busy attending to other aspects that time)


The picture following the post below was taken after the days session was over and a battery of photographers gathered to capture the climb wanted something exciting to go back with (The first technically right climb for Marengo as indicated in AJ_got-bhp's post below, disappointed them in terms of drama.)

The extremely tilted capture of Marengo is also not the technically correct way of taking a slope, always advisable to take perpendicularly. However, since all of the participants were away on an assisted drive, I was simply experimenting on my own. Somehow never imagined someone would capture the moment.

I did have a good run off area towards the right should things have gone out of hand. A simple twitch to the right would have brought things back in control.
