Thanks Tanveer.

Trail Blazing is not hardcore off road event - though you can also do that in making shortcuts between points - but more of soft offroading for SUV's and such.

You will have to involve yourself in map reading and working out the trails that can give you access to that elusive GPS coordinate.

Hope to share pictures soon.

Being held as part of year long monthly Navigation drives program in partnership with Westin Gurgaon and Westin Sohna.

What fun!

Yesterday me and Tanveer went to RECCE the route in his white elephant.

Safari needs good handling at best of times when going off road. On rocky terrain it need TLC even more. And Tanveer is master of that art.

Howsoever we got stuck in back of beyond in soft sand in nil signal area and fast approaching evening. All the equipment carried in the car came to rescue while we dug our way out of the sand in a small tight patch. Reading theory and practical is quite a difference. But we did get out without panic.

Well, the interesting bit was that the 4x4 stopped working when we needed it, and started working 2 minutes later. I guess she wanted us to get the shovels out and start digging :D

Do post some event pictures, now that its done!

No action pictures as the way points were al spread out but will try and pen down a few inputs.

In the final issue there were 12 way points including the start and finish. So the goal was to navigate to ten points en-route to end.

After assembly and breakfast a quick briefing was held for all participants on how to reach way points using "google maps" or similar online map software apps. A sheet with all the way points was also given along with on the air soft copy through email.

A specially programmed device was fitted in each car that records and time stamps when you enter the way point zone. The zone is generally a 25 to 50 meter box around the GPS coordinates of the way point. The device also helps in tracking the vehicles so that rescue, if needed, can be attempted without loss of time. The complete system along with tabulated results is provided by VGO-Next as a service for rallies, tours and navigation events.

To make life easier the first time around we gave out the best logical order in which the way points should be attempted. The route was still to be worked out by competitors. See the difference in approach by two competitors in reaching from point number two to point number three. The fastest guy took route suggested by Google maps (blue line) while most of the people familiar with Gurgaon took the grey line.

Just to give idea of waypoint three location see this screenshot. The road takes you nearby but not to the location which can only be approached through a cattle path.

Will share online tracking pictures from the phone as the event progressed.

Since Tanveer and me had cut down a few of the difficult point during our recce the flavour was soft off roading and not car breaking off road access. Still two guys managed to get their tyre walls cut on stony ground. This is easily avoided by carefully choosing the line to be taken.
