Arka / Headers , Not sure if am right.. but while climbing up the slopes, the person who does it first is always the one to do it the hard way, right ? 'cos the ones behind him can always use the tracks created by the ones before him.
So, if you are going to time everyone, doesnt the one who does it last get the best time, cos he uses the tracks that have been done by everyone, thus does not sink into the sand or rather has a very good grip ?

Actually I think it is the other way round the. BTW the last guy gets there the traction is less by the ground getting smoothened out by the spinning tires of the earlier vehicles. I think the same applies to crossing swamps/marsh. The tracks sink deeper and deeper as more vehicles use it.

@ Neo and 4x4, The person who does it first, if he does it right will have the advantage of a clear route.

The guys following have a disadvantage while doing an ascent if it is steep and they get into the ruts of the previous vehicle.

While crossing swamps / marshes, it is the other way around as the ground beneath gets compacted!

But you can never judge a terrain until you are stuck in it!

that was a really nice article. it is heartening to see journalists who can understand and communicate to their readers what they witness.
