So why is the scorpio better. Its lighter and has a smaller turning radius, so that may help in terrains pictured above, but won't a LSD quipped safari be a better bet on snow/slush kind of terrain.
That way none of the MM550 or CJs have LSD, still they perform better. I think it is the wheel articulation (live axle vs IFS) that puts the Mahindra steeds ahead of Tata when it comes to off-roading.

Wheel articulation will help in stuff like rocky terrains, what about slush etc., won't a LSD or something with DIFF locks be more compliant.
In serious slush both will get bogged down, as 2 tonnes is heavy, but LSD may stand slightly better chance of getting out on its own accord.

does the new scorpio have a Live Axle?

...
. In mud/slush, Diff Locks (or maybe LSD) stand a better chance.

No, but the 4WD version has IFS with torsion bar in the front, while the 2WD gets coil springs and anti-roll bar in the front.

PS - DirtyDan....another e-lynching
Arka, on the newer Scorpios where they changed the rear suspension...do you think those tubular radius arms or bushings that hold the axle in place are kind of vulnerable and fragile? Looks to me like maybe a rock or ridge could snap them off.

Lynching? I am more of a scoped rifle sniper type serial killer. I don't want to be close and hear the screams and see the blood. That can put you off your lunch!

Antiroll bar actually limits wheel articulation, the 4WD Scorpio doesn't have antiroll bars.

So the conclusion is that because of absence of anti roll bars scorpio is a better offroader?

I don't know, instead of speculating, I'll leave it to people who have actually seen both of them offroad. All this paper specs don't mean much in the field, only actual performance matters.

Champaigne safety

Samurai, are there emergency electricians on hand in case one of the on board refrigerators shorts out and the Dom Perignon begins to lose its chill?

Sorry, I should be flogged.

What I didn't want was this thread to turn into Jeep vs. luxury SUV debate. Kidding, but we might as well rename this section of the forum as "Team Mahindra".

Not Special Olympics, Samurai.
For a moment, ignore the fact that you have a CL jeep. With only your GV at hand, if you were to plan an OTR, how would you do that?

Huh! Hey, I don't own either SUVs and I have already given up off-roading with GV, so I am neutral party.

I wouldn't. I don't have the stomach to off-road with a CBU vehicle anymore. Just because I own the GV don't assume I have pockets deep enough to absorb the body damage repairs with impunity.

@dicor4x4 : Plugging for Desert Storm '09 but if you are looking at OTR adveture come and join the fun. Desert Storm

It is nice to do OTR in SUV's as long as the terrain allows but as Samurai put it the level of terrain that can be handled by Jeep vis others is not just matter of paper specs but also axel articulation, angle of aproach and departure (overhang), low rpm tourque, turning radius and the NUT behind the fifth wheel (and how thick his wallet is) - all play part in determining what a vehicle is able to handle.

I have not seen a scorpio in action, but a youtube video where a grassy slope defeated it because of open diffs.
So barring rocks, if you talk about sand etc., luxury SUVs should be quite capable if it has LSD or Locking diffs, with open diffs you are essentially 2WD

Scorpio on the Sand

Hi Guys,

During the TPC2006 we had a JUDO 4x4(with Diff-locks) Endeavour 4x4 and a Scorpio 4WD.

The Scorpio 4WD was able to finish the event.

The JUDO lacked the grunt.
The Endy was not responsive enough to make most climbs.

The Scorpio was surprisingly the winner because of the engine (Torque and rev-ability)
