In reference to eligibility for participation of a vehicle in the event, there have been numerous enquiries from enthusiasts with 2WD vehicles, the competition is Open ONLY for Jeeps & SUVs with functioning 4x4

Hello Shams and all the Deccan jeepers,
Wish you all the success in the OTR tomorrow, and wish there is safety all the way.
I wish I could accept your invitation, but am very busy preparing my son's Ford for The Great Arc recce from Hyd. to Mussorie. It will be a pleasure to be with such passionate jeepers during my visit.
Very keen to see/feel/experience the jeeps in The City of Pearls.
I am sure I will be missing some beautiful jewels and some wonderful gentlemen during the 31-08-08 meet. Give my regards to Nawab Sahab and love to all the young devils.
Yours....................................UBS

I think DKG will be posting the complete report.

Yes they are man made obstacles. There were places around where the terrain would be challenging but organising the event the way they did would be not possible.

The 2008 Jeep Thrills Mitsubishi Monsoon Challenge held yesterday 60 kms south west of Hyderabad at Thirumallapur village was a MEGA SUCCESS !!!

Hearty congratulations to Shams and his colleagues at Jeep Thrills on a most impressive event organised.

The organisers were very clear that when an event on this scale is being organised the action has to be within sight of the spectator pavilion so that the day's activity is enjoyable for both participants and spectators. For the purpose the original site of Himayatsagar lake was the first preference and many Sundays back during an excursion to some forests I had discovered in the vicinity of Vikharabad the group had visited a site close by at a village called Thirumallapur. That very day we all fell in love with the location. It was breathtakingly beautiful. With hills on three sides and a valley as the main ground it would have been perfect. This was the second option for the event site.

Doubts were raised on the viability of organising something 60+ kms away from Hyderabad. Would the majority of participants come so far? What about spectators, what about the media.

It was decided to stick to the Himayatsagar lake bed which is just 15 kms, on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Shams, Raj and I spent a whole Sunday playing around the site in our cars discussing the kinds of obstacles and where the tent would go up etc. But the rain gods had other plans. By mid august it had rained so heavily that the entire site on the Himayathsagar lake bed was submerged. There was no way we could have held the event there. Shams and his Jeep Thrills buddies decided that the second venue at Thirumallapur was the only option left.

It was then decided that they would create a series of obstacles packed in a ground within visual site of the spectator pavilion. Further given the overwhelming response on applications for participation it was decided that the obstacles would be designed in a manner so as to make it exciting and negotiable by the varied offroaders participating.

A large tented pavilion was setup for the comfort of spectators. A separate tent housed facilities for breakfast with a stall for refreshments and cigarettes (they seem to think out to the minutest detail, or is it the primary detail? ) Later a sumptous hot lunch was prepared and hosted at this same tent.

I was most impressed by another attention to detail. A fully equiped ambulance with doctor and nursing staff was present on site to deal with immediate trauma care. That was simply outstanding on the part of organisers to have arranged for that.

This was the sight that welcomed you as you approached the venue

Wow, that would take lots of the effort/money to set that up. Not to mention permission from land owners/authorities.
