Count me in too, for any future excursions. I own a Pajero sport and would be interested to meet a few like minded folks and explore the unexplored.

Re: Off-Roading Trails in and around Bangalore

Tomorrow we are heading to Achalu Betta at Kanakpura (about 60kms from Bangalore )for an off road drive in our Gypsy and MM540. We would be meeting at nice road exit junction at Kanakpura Road by about 7am. An otherwise easy trail appears to be moderate at present due to the rains and doable on any 4x4.
We would be more than happy if fellow bhpians join us for this short off road drive. Looking forward. Cheers

We are leaving Bangalore by about 7am and we may reach by about 8.30am. The trail drive to the mountain top is about half an hour after which we get back.
I will PM my contact number.

Re: Off-Roading Trails in and around Bangalore

May not come tomorrow but we will plan a gypsy chukker one of these days. I like doing very mild off road trails in my stock gypsy just to give it some exercise.

Sure, will do it sometime soon. Infact at Kanakpura road there are numerous unexplored off road trails which can be planned as single day off road drives from Bangalore. Need to do some recce though.

A quick question- can a AWD handle the trails in the place you have mentioned?

Re: Off-Roading Trails in and around Bangalore

To give some perspective, the Fulltime 4WD of a Fortuner and the 4WD of a Pajero / Pajero Sport/ Ford Endeavour are more powerful and capable than say, the AWD of a Honda CRV or a Chevrolet Captiva.

But then the Fortuner and Pajero are heavy longer wheelbase and longer chassis vehicles and hence may get stuck in deep slush or beached on a rut. Same goes for the Ford Endeavour.

Even a vehicle with a shorter wheelbase with low overhangs like the Skoda Yeti and its Haldex 4X4, while a capable enough vehicle, may not be able to handle this level of Off road work. A Subaru / Chevrolet Forester might have succeeded there.

However, very honestly, in the monsoons, judging by the pictures and considering the terrain traversed, I would be wary even in my bone-stock nylon-tyred Gypsy despite its narrowness, lightness and availability of 4L, because the other Gypsys who were on that trail were all shod with mud terrain or similar purpose-oriented tyres. The old Thars too succeeded well. An old Willys or Mahindra Jeep in stock form would have succeeded too. My new Thar with its short chassis and 4L would aso have managed it.

In short, I personally wouldnt try doing this in a Soft Roader.

No, not at all. Even a proper 4x4 with low ratio gears may not be able to do it without winch support. The ruts are chest deep at certain junctures of the trail. I have written a detailed report of the OTR excursion in Achalu terrain. Please refer to the link below.
