well it seems ARRS is in talks with the forest dept and the issue should be resolved soon. ARRS would not be closed, but the radio telemetry project may have to be shelved.

Nothing else other than what Samurai mentioned. A very harmless rat snake.

@GTO: I have only read initial few pages of this thread. When treading off road or in jungles, it is a better option to use ankle size boots alongwith anklets (strap-on tough wrap arounds that will go over the trousers and the ankle of the boots. These are an easy quick option than cumbersome tall boots (which are a must for marshes). Also, these days Army makes better boots methinks or try from an AF source. There are new AF pattern drill boots for cadets which are soft on the feet and tough outside. Will check if available currently. Lemme know.

Have had a few encounters with snakes, a monitor lizard and have suffered two scorpion bites. Will post the experiences subsequently.

DeltaWing - You talk of scorpion bites as if they are a walk in the park. Would be interesting to know your experiences(been a month since you promised)

On the subject of footwear (and sorry for being slightly off-topic) - for trekking I'd found the shoes worn by NCC cadets very good since they have excellent grip - at least they used to be. Any idea whether they are available in the market?

Read through the whole thread! Fascinating, and a little scary. I'm still not sure I understand snakes :

Is that a viper ? Found it when we were dismantling the old house's mud walls in Coorg - this dude was resting in a cavity between the wooden beam and the wall.

Do all civil hospitals carry antivenom ?

No guys, that is no Russels !!
Though my first Love has always been Cars, I share the same love for animals. I guess thats one of the Krait species, not sure which one but I can guarentee you that its no Russels.
Russels don't raise their body in defense like that. They just Whack you from Ground zero level!!
